Scorchers Fall Short as Reading's Top Order Proves Too Strong at Knowl Hill

Reading won the toss and chose to bat at Knowl Hill on Sunday, and their decision was emphatically vindicated as they posted an imposing 159 for 7 from their 20 overs, a total that ultimately proved well beyond the reach of the Sonning U11 Scorchers, who were bowled out for 104 in reply.

The visitors' innings was anchored by a commanding knock from Vidhu Tripathi, who struck 29 from just 22 balls, including four fours and a six, before retiring not out. Tripathi's aggressive intent set the tone early, and he was well supported by Neel Shende, who finished unbeaten on 21 from 14 deliveries, clattering four boundaries in a fluent display. A second-wicket partnership of 52 between Shende and Snithik Subash — during which Shende contributed 12 — gave Reading a platform that the Scorchers struggled to dismantle. Janardhan Kode added a brisk 14, and Reesha Bharti chipped in with 13 before retiring, ensuring the scoreboard kept ticking throughout.

The Scorchers' bowling effort was hindered by 58 extras conceded, including 27 wides and 20 no-balls, which gifted Reading nearly a third of their total. Jasper Hawkins was the pick of the Sonning attack, returning figures of 2 for 11 from his two overs, clean bowling both Tharakan Ganagabalan and Reyansh Katuri. Arthur Teed was economical at the top with 2-0-9-1, removing the dangerous Daniel Clack early, while Chloe Dawes and Ranbir Setia each claimed a wicket apiece. Jessica Hawkins bowled Kode but was expensive, conceding 22 runs from her two overs, with 12 no-balls proving costly.

Chasing 160, the Scorchers needed a strong start from their top order but found themselves under pressure almost immediately. Captain Alexander Hatchett-Walker provided some early resistance with 14 from 18 balls, hitting two fours, but wickets fell at regular intervals as Reading's varied bowling attack shared the spoils. Alexander Green departed for 4, bowled by Daniel Clack, and when Archie Jansen fell to Viyaan Kasaram for 3, Sonning were 28 for 2.

Hatchett-Walker's dismissal, caught off Snithik Subash for 14 with the score on 34, left the Scorchers in real difficulty at 34 for 3. Aarav Channapatna struck a quick-fire 7 from 5 balls before being bowled by Reading captain Hriaan Arun, and at 46 for 4, the required rate had climbed beyond realistic reach.

Jessica Hawkins produced the standout innings of the Sonning reply, an unbeaten 33 from just 17 balls that included five fours and a six. Her aggressive stroke-play was the brightest moment of the chase and kept the scoreboard moving even as wickets tumbled at the other end. However, she found little sustained support, with Chloe Dawes managing just 2 from 12 balls before being bowled by Reesha Bharti, and Anay Patel falling for a duck to Janardhan Kode.

Reading's bowling was disciplined throughout, with Viyaan Kasaram the standout performer, claiming 2 for 5 from his two overs. Three of Reading's bowlers — Hriaan Arun, Neel Shende, and Hafsa Siddiqui — each bowled a maiden over, maintaining the pressure that prevented the Scorchers from building any sustained momentum. Harry Waite batted through the final overs for an unbeaten 6, but the Scorchers ultimately closed on 104 for 9, losing by 55 runs in the BYCL Under 11 T20 Blast West fixture.
