Match Report

Stingers Dominate Wargrave with Commanding 58-Run Victory in Indoor League

Sonning Stingers Soft Ball produced a comprehensive all-round display to defeat Wargrave by 58 runs in the Berkshire Women's Softball Indoor Division 1, posting 107 for 1 in reply to the visitors' 49 for 7.

Captain Melissa Pengraeve won the toss and elected to field, a decision that proved inspired as the Stingers' bowling attack immediately put Wargrave under pressure. Chloe Bailey set the tone with an economical three-over spell, conceding just 8 runs while claiming 2 wickets. Rita Green was equally impressive, returning figures of 2 for 7 from her three overs — the most economical bowling performance of the match — as she gave the opposition batters nothing to work with.

Wargrave struggled throughout their innings, with no batter able to build any real momentum. Amanda Bayley top-scored for the visitors with 8 runs from 21 balls but was dismissed three times in the process, while Kaavya Jegannathan also contributed 8 from 11 deliveries before falling twice. Pengraeve rounded off the bowling effort with 2 for 7 from her two overs, ensuring Wargrave were restricted to a below-par total of 49, of which 24 came in extras.

The Stingers' reply was emphatic from the outset. Opener Chloe Bailey anchored the early stages with a composed 14 from 16 balls, while Elinor Longridge chipped in with 6 to ensure a solid platform. Pengraeve then moved through the gears at number three, striking a four and a six in an aggressive knock of 18 from just 13 deliveries.

The standout batting performance, however, belonged to Rita Green. Coming in at number five, Green delivered a sublime innings of 27 from only 14 balls, clearing the boundary once for six and finding the rope twice in what was comfortably the highest individual score of the match. Her aggressive approach ensured the Stingers surged well past the target with ease.

Wargrave's bowlers found the going tough, with extras proving costly — 36 in total, including 27 wides and 4 no-balls. Sarah Bennett was the most expensive, conceding 21 runs from her two overs, while Amy Betts claimed the solitary Sonning wicket, dismissing Sandhya Sharma. No other Wargrave bowler managed a breakthrough as the Stingers lost just a single wicket in their innings.

The convincing victory, built on disciplined bowling and aggressive batting, earned the Stingers four league points and underlined their credentials in the division. Green's outstanding double contribution — 2 for 7 with the ball and 27 with the bat — was the defining performance of the afternoon.
