Match Report

Stingers Secure Comfortable Victory at Slough Despite Lower Run Total

The Sonning Stingers Soft Ball side travelled to Slough CC Ground 1 on 17th July and came away with a convincing victory in the Berkshire Women's Softball Performance – East league fixture, despite posting what appeared a modest total of 75 for 1 from their 12 overs.

Slough won the toss and elected to bat first, with their innings built around two key contributors. Aamna Ahmed top-scored with an enterprising 21 from 12 balls, striking three fours in a lively knock batting at number seven. Raabia Akhter complemented her with 18 from 13 deliveries, also finding the boundary three times as she batted at five. Richa Bhalla chipped in with 8 from 7 balls, but the remaining Slough batters struggled to build momentum, with the top order in particular finding runs hard to come by.

The Stingers' bowling effort was a genuine team affair, with seven bowlers sharing the workload across 12 overs. Frances Howson was the most economical of those who bowled two overs, conceding just 9 runs while claiming a wicket. Siobhan Davis also picked up a wicket in her two overs, as did Sandhya Sharma from her single over and Katie Barrows from her two. The Stingers claimed seven wickets in total, significantly denting Slough's scoring in the pairs format.

In reply, the Stingers' batting was anchored by an excellent innings from Siobhan Davis, who top-scored with 18 from 12 balls, dispatching four boundaries in an authoritative display at number three. Frances Howson provided early impetus at the top of the order, contributing 10 from 9 balls with two fours, ensuring the Stingers started positively.

Captain Melissa Pengraeve played a steady hand lower down, making 8 from 12 balls with two boundaries, while Freya Spafford added a useful 9 from her 12 deliveries. The Stingers lost only a single wicket throughout their innings — Freya Spafford the sole batter dismissed — with Ameena Firyad claiming the only scalp for Slough from her single over.

A significant feature of the match was the volume of extras. Slough's bowling conceded 57 extras in 12 overs, including 35 penalty runs, 12 wides and 10 no-balls, which proved decisive in inflating the Stingers' total. While the Stingers also conceded 35 extras during Slough's innings — including 22 wides and 8 no-balls — the differential in penalty runs ultimately shaped the contest.

The victory earned the Stingers three league points, while Slough were left to reflect on a match where discipline with the ball proved as costly as any batting shortcomings. For captain Pengraeve and her side, it was a thoroughly professional away performance built on collective contributions with both bat and ball.
