Sonning 3rd XI Fall Short in Chase as Checkendon Post Commanding Total

Sonning 3rd XI travelled to Checkendon Cricket Club on 16 May for a Division 7A league encounter and, despite a valiant batting effort led by Max Murphy, fell 77 runs short of a formidable target of 253. Checkendon, having won the toss and elected to bat, built their innings around several substantial contributions to post 252 all out from 41.5 overs.

Opener Karan Sheth was the architect of the Checkendon innings, striking a fluent 78 from 77 balls laced with ten fours and two sixes. He shared a productive opening stand of 52 with Vishal Gupta, who contributed 20, before the pair were separated by Tarun Raj Ponsingh, who had Gupta caught by Murphy. After captain Kartik Chitta fell cheaply for 1, trapped lbw by Ponsingh, Sheth combined with Rishabh Singh for a decisive third-wicket partnership of 89 that pushed the total past 160 and laid the platform for late acceleration.

Aseem Shafi broke the stand by dismissing Sheth, and then bowled Singh for 45 to claim two important wickets. However, Sudhir Kothem arrived at the crease and unleashed an explosive cameo of 48 from just 35 balls, clearing the boundary four times as he and Darshan Jain added 66 for the fifth wicket. Reyansh Setia stemmed the flow in impressive fashion, taking 3 for 24 from his five overs, including removing Kothem, Jain, and Taruni Dhara Rao Gandham in quick succession. Murphy returned to clean up the tail with two wickets, and Elias Haidari wrapped up the innings by having Prashant Singh caught by Setia.

The Sonning reply began poorly as Rishabh Singh produced a hostile opening spell of 6-1-7-2, removing Hugo Popplewell bowled for 9 and then having Aseem Shafi caught by Prashant Singh for 11. At 23 for 2, the visitors were already under significant pressure, and when Kunal Mendiratta — who returned outstanding figures of 7-3-10-2 — dismissed Elliot Dawes lbw for 9 and had Arun Raghavendra caught, Sonning slipped to 65 for 5.

Murphy dug in and anchored the middle overs with admirable resolve, constructing a vital sixth-wicket partnership of 78 with wicketkeeper Aditya Kumar. Murphy accumulated steadily, threading nine fours through the field during a patient knock of 60 from 97 deliveries, while Kumar played with greater freedom, cracking six boundaries in a well-struck 31 from 36 balls. Their stand briefly reignited Sonning's hopes, lifting the score from 65 to 143.

The dismissal of Kumar, bowled by Kothem, proved the turning point. Kothem then removed Haidari for a duck caught-and-bowled and finished with 3 for 23 from four overs, ripping through the middle order to extinguish any remaining prospect of a Sonning victory. Murphy fell shortly afterwards for 60, caught by Hiren Panchal off Kothem's bowling, and at 151 for 8 the chase was effectively over.

Reyansh Setia struck a brisk 13 from 12 balls and shared a ninth-wicket stand of 23 with Tarun Raj Ponsingh, who finished unbeaten on 8, but Sonning could only reach 175 for 9 from their 45 overs. Despite collecting eight bonus points — three for batting and five for bowling — captain Arun Kumar Pera's side were left to rue a top-order collapse that placed too great a burden on Murphy and Kumar in a defeat by 77 runs.
