Panchal's Brilliant 43 Steers U15 Scorchers to Narrow Victory at Peppard Common
Sonning U15 Scorchers edged past Peppard Stoke Row by just a single run in a pulsating U15 Performance League Pool 4 encounter at Peppard Common on Monday evening, defending their total of 147 for 4 to restrict the hosts to 146 for 3 from their 20 overs.
Captain Harrison Lott won the toss and elected to bat, a decision that proved justified as the Scorchers' top order laid a solid platform. Lott himself combined with Aveer Sidhu for an opening stand of 55, both batsmen accumulating steadily without finding the boundary. Lott contributed 20 from 29 balls before falling bowled to Scott Reyburn, and Sidhu followed shortly after for 21, caught by Sam Franklin off Oscar Williams, leaving Sonning at 57 for 2.
Kavya Panchal then took centre stage with a commanding innings that would prove the difference between the sides. The wicketkeeper-batsman struck five fours and a six in a fluent 43 from just 29 deliveries, demonstrating superb timing and intent. Panchal forged a crucial third-wicket partnership of 63 with Elliot Dawes, who played the ideal supporting role with 22 from 24 balls, including two boundaries. Their alliance carried the score from 57 to 120 before Dawes was bowled by Harry Lotery.
Panchal eventually fell caught and bowled by Alex Kind for his excellent 43, but Kanishka Suriarachchi provided a vital late flourish, smashing an unbeaten 12 from nine balls with two fours to push the total to 147 for 4. The Peppard attack struggled for discipline throughout, conceding 29 extras including 20 wides, with ten different bowlers used across the innings.
The hosts' reply began explosively as captain Sam Franklin blazed 17 from just 11 balls, cracking two fours and a six to signal his intent. However, Suriarachchi struck twice in his spell to transform the contest, first having Franklin caught by Lott and then dismissing Dominic Ellis for a duck, caught by Reyansh Setia. Harry Farrington also chipped in with the key wicket of Harry Lotery, bowled for 4, and suddenly Peppard were reeling at 32 for 3.
What followed was a remarkable recovery led by Alex Kind, who compiled a mature half-century of 50 from 47 balls, finding the boundary four times during a patient yet increasingly assertive knock before retiring. Henry Baker proved an equally stubborn partner, grinding his way to an unbeaten 43 from 50 deliveries, including one six. Their unbroken fourth-wicket stand hauled Peppard back into contention, but ultimately the early damage proved too costly.
Suriarachchi's outstanding figures of 2 for 11 from three overs were the standout bowling performance on either side, while Sonning's nine-man attack kept chipping away at the required rate. Despite the hosts' valiant fightback through Kind and Baker, they fell agonisingly short, finishing on 146 for 3 — one run adrift of the target in a match that could hardly have been any closer.
