Fry's Century Guides Chiswick to Victory Despite Fitton's Four-Wicket Haul
Zach Fry's magnificent 112 proved the difference as Chiswick secured a convincing victory over Sonning Sunday As at Riverside Drive Sports Ground. Fry's century, adorned with 22 boundaries, helped the hosts post a challenging 169 all out before Will Whitehead's five-wicket haul dismantled Sonning's reply, dismissing them for 134.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Chiswick's innings initially revolved around Fry as wickets tumbled at the other end. Jacob Fitton tore through the top order with an impressive spell, removing Dino Antoniades, Nahiyan Ahmed, and Gulber Suri for ducks, while also claiming the wicket of opener Jim Yorath who contributed 16.
Despite the collapse that left Chiswick precariously placed at 45-5, Fry found support from Matt Jupe (20) in a crucial 78-run partnership for the sixth wicket. The stand revitalized the innings before Jupe fell LBW to Alexander Fleming with the score on 123. Sonning's bowling was led by Jacob Fitton (4-24) with excellent support from Kabir Dave (3-30), while Toby Fitton, Alexander Fleming, and Sharon Fleming picked up a wicket apiece.
Chasing 170 for victory, Sonning made a promising start through captain Charles Astwood (32) and wicketkeeper Matthew Calhoum (28), who both struck boundaries freely. However, once Astwood was run out by Dusty Dyson and Calhoum fell to the same bowler, caught by Whitehead, the momentum shifted dramatically.
Whitehead then assumed center stage with a devastating spell of seam bowling, returning figures of 5-10 from his seven overs, including two maidens. His accuracy and movement proved too much for Sonning's middle order as Richard Skeil (1), Matthew Clift (16), Kabir Dave (5), Sharon Fleming (2), and Siobhan Davis (0) all succumbed to his bowling.
Toby Fitton offered resistance with a defiant 31, including five boundaries, but found little support from the lower order. Jim Yorath chipped in with 2-28 for Chiswick while Karan Shah claimed the important wicket of Fitton, caught by Christopher Briggs, to effectively end Sonning's resistance.
The 35-run victory for Chiswick was built on Fry's batting masterclass and Whitehead's clinical bowling performance, with Sonning left to rue their middle-order collapse despite promising contributions from Astwood, Calhoum, and Toby Fitton.
