Stingers Cruise to Comfortable 25-Run Victory Over Emmbrook & Bearwood
Sonning Stingers produced an excellent all-round display to defeat Emmbrook & Bearwood by 25 runs in the Berkshire Women's Softball Performance League on 25th June 2023, chasing down their opponents' total with considerable ease.
Emmbrook & Bearwood won the toss and elected to bat first, but their top order struggled to build momentum against disciplined Stingers bowling. Frances Howson was the pick of the attack, returning superb figures of 2-7 from her two overs to put the hosts on the back foot early. Uthara Rajan and Amberley Taylor each claimed a wicket apiece, while Elinor Longridge also chipped in with a scalp as the Stingers shared the bowling duties effectively across seven bowlers.
Katherine Brickley top-scored for Emmbrook & Bearwood with 8 from 11 balls, including a boundary, while Lucy Prismall contributed 7 off 9 deliveries and Deepa Ravi matched that total from just 7 balls lower down the order. However, no batter was able to truly accelerate, and the hosts were restricted to 50-5 from their 12 overs, a total that included 15 extras — 12 of which came from wides.
The Stingers' reply was emphatic. Frances Howson led the charge at the top of the order, striking a commanding 16 from just 10 balls with two boundaries to set the tone immediately. Rita Green was equally impressive at the other end, blasting 15 off 10 deliveries, including a four and the only six of the match, as the opening pair took the game away from the opposition.
Captain Grace Phillips provided a steady hand in the middle order with 9 off 12 balls, while Elinor Longridge delivered a blistering cameo at number eight, smashing 11 from just 6 balls with two fours to put the finishing touches on a dominant performance.
Emmbrook & Bearwood's bowling attack found little joy, with extras proving a significant problem as 18 wides leaked from their 12 overs. Only Deepa Ravi, who conceded just 2 runs from her single over, and Katherine Brickley, who gave away only 5 from two overs, managed to stem the flow. Darshna Modha claimed the sole bowling success for the hosts, taking 1-17 from two overs, but it was too little to make any meaningful impact.
The Stingers reached 75-3 from their 12 overs, securing a convincing victory and collecting three valuable league points. The win was built on the foundation of tight bowling that restricted Emmbrook & Bearwood's scoring, followed by an aggressive batting display led by the outstanding top-order contributions of Howson and Green.
