Falcons Soar to Victory as Baig's Four-Wicket Haul Dismantles Emmbrook & Bearwood
Sonning U9 Falcons secured a convincing victory over Emmbrook & Bearwood at King George's Field on 17th May, chasing down 98 with relative comfort to post 123 in their BYCL Under 9 Super 8s Central league fixture.
Captain Ahmad Naqash won the toss and opted to field first, a decision that proved astute as the Falcons' bowling attack kept the visitors in check throughout their 20 overs. The standout performer with the ball was Abdul-Ahad Baig, who delivered a superb spell of 3-3 from his three overs, claiming four wickets while conceding just three runs off the bat. His accuracy and ability to find the edge were the defining feature of the first innings. Zachary Knight also impressed, picking up three wickets from his two overs for nine runs, giving the opposition middle and lower order little respite.
Emmbrook & Bearwood struggled to build momentum against disciplined Sonning bowling. Albert Miles top-scored for the visitors with eight runs from 20 balls, while captain Ted Grayson, Jude Allanson, and Arjan Khela each contributed six apiece. Arjan Khela offered the brightest moment for the away side with a crisp boundary during his brief knock. However, 13 wickets fell across the innings, and extras — totalling 61 — ultimately inflated the scoreboard beyond what the batters themselves managed, with only 37 runs coming from the bat.
Aadvik Gonchikar deserves particular praise for an outstanding opening spell, bowling two overs that included a maiden while conceding just three runs. His control at the top set the tone for the Falcons' entire fielding effort.
In reply, Sonning's batting was headlined by Aadvik Gonchikar, who moved up the order to devastating effect. Coming in at number nine, he struck a superb 10 from 14 balls, including a four and a towering six — the only maximum of the match. Ibrahim Jafri matched him with eight runs from 13 balls, finding the boundary once, while Ahmad Naqash contributed a steady eight from 19 deliveries to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
The Emmbrook & Bearwood bowling struggled for consistency, with 78 extras conceded in the Sonning innings — 32 in wides and 42 in no-balls. Matthew Booker was the pick of the opposition attack, claiming two wickets for nine runs from his two overs without conceding a single wide or no-ball, a disciplined effort that stood in stark contrast to his teammates. Sivansh Vinod also took a wicket but was expensive, going for 10 runs including six no-balls in his two overs.
The Falcons reached their target of 99 with plenty to spare, finishing on 123 for nine from their 20 overs. While both sides found run-scoring from the bat challenging, it was Sonning's superior bowling discipline — spearheaded by Baig's remarkable four-wicket haul and Gonchikar's maiden over — that proved the decisive difference on a productive morning at the Top Pitch.
