Match Report
U11 Sharks Fall Short as Shinfield Claim Seven-Run Victory
Sonning U11 Sharks suffered a narrow defeat at the Recreation Ground on 28 July, falling seven runs short as Shinfield Under 11 Warriors chased down their total of 97 to win with 104 for 7 in this BYCL Under 11 T16 Pairs league fixture. Shinfield won the toss and inserted the Sharks, a decision that ultimately paid dividends despite a spirited batting effort from the visitors.
Batting first, Sonning posted 97 for 6 from their 20 overs, with contributions spread across the order. Ethan Cawsey top-scored with 10 from 11 balls, while Divik Gupta and Arjun Chirunamala each added 9, Chirunamala doing so at a brisk rate from just nine deliveries. Mitul Kalidindi and Heet Panchal both chipped in with 8 apiece, ensuring that nearly every batter made a start. The difficulty was that no one was able to convert into a truly match-defining knock. Extras contributed 28 to the total, with 14 wides and 14 no-balls from the Shinfield attack offering valuable additional runs.
Albert W was the most effective of the Shinfield bowlers, claiming 2 for 14 from his two overs, while Akshaj W and Advait W each picked up a wicket. The home side's discipline was mixed — James W conceded 15 runs from two overs including six no-balls — but they did enough to restrict Sonning to a below-par total.
In reply, Shinfield were given a flying start by Arjun W, who struck 13 from 14 balls including two fours, and Akshaj W matched that figure with 13 off 12 deliveries. However, it was James W, batting at number ten, who proved the difference. His unbeaten 20 from 16 balls, featuring three boundaries, propelled the home side past the target and ensured the Warriors finished on 104 for 7.
Sonning's bowlers fought hard to keep their side in the contest. Mitul Kalidindi was outstanding, returning figures of 2 for 8 from three economical overs — comfortably the best bowling spell of the match. His tight lines put Shinfield under genuine pressure in the early overs and gave the Sharks hope of defending their modest total. Heet Panchal was similarly parsimonious, conceding just 3 runs from two overs while picking up a wicket, and Thomas Waite added another scalp with 1 for 9 from his two overs.
Matyas Sheppard also claimed two wickets but was expensive, going for 15 from two overs with six wides and four no-balls. Captain Anay Patel was tidy with the ball, conceding only 4 runs from two overs, though he was unable to take a wicket. At the other end of the scale, Arjun Chirunamala's three overs cost 24 runs, giving the Shinfield batters the scoring opportunities they needed to stay ahead of the rate.
Despite taking seven wickets — more than Shinfield managed against them — the Sharks were ultimately let down by conceding 24 extras of their own, including 12 wides and 12 no-balls. With the margin of defeat just seven runs, greater discipline with the ball could have turned the result in Sonning's favour. Kalidindi's economical spell and Panchal's miserly figures were clear highlights, but the Sharks will know they needed more consistency across the full bowling attack on a day when the match was there for the taking.
