Scorchers' Bowling Masterclass Sets Up Comfortable Victory at Church Meadow

Sonning U11 Scorchers produced an outstanding all-round bowling display to restrict Thame Town to 78 for 9 before chasing down the target with 31 balls to spare, securing a well-deserved victory in the U11 Hundred Pool 2 at Church Meadow on 26 July.

Captain Jonathan Turner won the toss and elected to field, a decision vindicated almost immediately as the Scorchers' attack tore into the Thame top order. Musa Meer struck with the new ball, finding the edge of Oliver Holmes's bat with Alexander Green pouching the catch, before a sharp piece of fielding from Kiyaan Gupta produced the run out of Albie Bloomfield to leave the hosts reeling at 3 for 2.

Thame captain Finley Marianczak and Jimmy Rumsey steadied the ship with a crucial partnership of 44, the best stand of the home innings. Rumsey was the more aggressive of the pair, striking two fours in his 18 from 25 balls before retiring not out, while Marianczak anchored proceedings with a patient 15 from 29 deliveries. Their resistance, however, was punctuated by a devastating spell from Elijah Patterson, whose figures of 2 for 2 from 10 balls were nothing short of exceptional, with nine of his deliveries going as dot balls.

The middle order collapse that followed was swift and clinical. Vivaan Ramesh bowled Rory Shaw and Bobby Walker-Higgs in quick succession, while Alexander Hatchett-Walker clean bowled Zack Corbould as three wickets fell without a run being added at 47. Luke Brookes provided late resistance with a fluent 20 from 21 balls, including three fours, but Alexander Green had him bowled and the innings folded for 78. Across the bowling unit, Hatchett-Walker's figures of 1 for 7 from 15 balls and Zain Baloch's miserly 3 runs from 10 balls underlined the collective discipline.

The chase began with an early wobble as Turner was run out by Bobby Walker-Higgs with only 2 on the board. Ramesh, having already impressed with ball in hand, stepped up with the bat, compiling a composed 24 from 25 balls laced with three fours. He added 24 for the second wicket with Hatchett-Walker, who contributed a brisk 8 before being bowled by Luke Brookes.

Lewis Towner injected further momentum with an enterprising 14 from just 12 deliveries, cracking three boundaries before being caught by Holmes off Walker-Higgs at 45 for 3. That brought Alexander Green to the crease, and he proved the match-winner with a blistering unbeaten 18 from only 9 balls, dispatching three fours as he and Baloch, who finished 4 not out, guided the Scorchers past the target with considerable ease.

The Scorchers' victory was built on a disciplined bowling effort that shared the wickets across five bowlers and kept Thame under constant pressure. Ramesh's dual contribution of 2 wickets and 24 runs with the bat, Patterson's miserly spell, and Green's explosive late cameo were the standout performances in a comprehensive team display that earned Sonning full points in the league.
