Sonning 3rd XI Fall Short in Run Chase as Seaward's Unbeaten 91 Proves Decisive

Sonning 3rd XI's decision to field first after winning the toss at Welford Park ultimately proved fruitless as the hosts posted a formidable 245 all out before restricting the visitors to 203 in this Division 7A encounter on 30th May.

Welford Park's innings was built around a superb unbeaten 91 from Max Seaward, who struck 12 fours and a six from 98 balls and was involved in a succession of vital partnerships throughout the middle and lower order. Opening bat Suvojyoti Datta provided the early impetus with a fluent 64 off 76 balls, laced with 11 boundaries, as the pair put on 53 for the third wicket after Datta had earlier shared a 29-run opening stand with Balbir Sidhu. Sardar sarfraz Abbasi contributed a breezy 20 from just 13 deliveries, while Seaward anchored the innings from his arrival at number four right through to the final ball, adding partnerships of 32, 33 and 35 with Srinath Balasubramanian, Andy Cale and Mason Brown respectively.

Isaac Jenner was the pick of the Sonning bowlers, returning figures of 3-45 from his nine overs, including the wickets of Will Herrington — caught by Daniel Parks — and a caught-and-bowled to dismiss Mason Brown, before bowling Harry Thorpe for a duck. Reyansh Setia claimed two wickets, trapping Karthik Balusamy lbw for a golden duck and having Datta caught, while Ali Parkes also picked up two, including the lbw of Balasubramanian. Rahul Sood bowled tidily for his 1-21 from five overs, accounting for skipper Cale. However, 25 extras, including 12 wides, did little to help Sonning's cause in the field.

The chase began poorly when Ali Parkes fell for 5, caught by Seaward off the bowling of Welford Park captain Cale, leaving Sonning 14 for one. Captain Arun Kumar Pera and Sood steadied matters with a 32-run second-wicket stand before Pera was caught at slip off Drew Brown for 19. Sood looked in good touch, striking five fours in his 32 from 35 balls, but his departure — bowled by Brown — at 78 for three shifted the momentum firmly towards the home side.

Rishabh Singh's dismissal for 19, also bowled by Brown, left Sonning wobbling at 82 for four, but Ravi Kumar and Daniel Parks mounted a spirited fightback. The pair put on 76 for the fifth wicket, the largest partnership of the Sonning innings, with Kumar playing the aggressor. His 42 from 46 balls, featuring six fours, was the highest individual score in the reply, while Parks contributed a patient 24 from 51 deliveries to keep the chase alive.

Kumar's departure, caught by Karthik Balusamy off Balasubramanian with the score on 158, effectively ended Sonning's realistic hopes of victory. Parks followed soon after, and though Asad Imam hit a useful 16, Welford Park's Will Herrington tore through the lower order with figures of 4-28 from 7.3 overs, bowling Nischal Tiwari, Moksha Suriarachchi and Reyansh Setia to wrap up the innings. Drew Brown's miserly 3-17 from six overs, including two maidens, had set the tone earlier in the innings and earned him the most economical figures of the match.

Sonning were eventually bowled out for 203 in 41.3 overs, falling 42 runs short of their target. Despite collecting 10 bonus points — five each for batting and bowling — the defeat leaves Sonning's 3rd XI with work to do in Division 7A.
