Match Report

Sonning Women Secure Victory Despite Falling Short of Target at Emmbrook

Sonning Women's 1st XI claimed a winning result against Maidenhead & Bray in their Super 8 Development Group 4 fixture at Emmbrook and Bearwood CC on Sunday, with captain Michaela Herrett's side putting in a solid all-round display after winning the toss and electing to field.

Maidenhead & Bray, batting first in this pairs format, posted 90 for 4 from their 16 overs. Michelle Jeyarajah top-scored with 19 off 17 balls, providing the most substantial contribution with the bat. Himani Basotia added 11 from 14 deliveries, while Aleeza Mehmood chipped in with 10 off 13 balls. Contributions came from across the order, with Emily Bradshaw making 9 at the top and both Izzy Ratcliffe and Shirley Emmanuel scoring 7 apiece.

Sonning's bowling attack was led by the impressive Geethika Jyothis, who returned figures of 1 for 9 from 4.1 overs, including a maiden — comfortably the most economical spell of the innings. Hannah Brooks also claimed a wicket, taking 1 for 8 from her single over. The remaining bowlers found consistent wicket-taking difficult, with extras proving costly as 27 runs were conceded in sundries, including 24 wides across the Sonning attack.

In reply, Sonning reached 86 for 2 from their 16 overs. In the pairs format with its starting total and dismissal penalties, the hosts accumulated enough to secure the result despite not matching the opposition's raw runs total. Geethika Jyothis was again central to proceedings, this time with the bat, striking a team-high 22 off just 19 balls to underline a superb individual all-round performance.

Sophie Parker provided a steady hand at the top of the order, compiling 12 from 15 deliveries, while Chloe Bailey contributed a brisk 7 off 8 balls. Captain Herrett added a useful 7 from 7 balls lower down the order, and Sarah Wonham made 5 from her seven deliveries. Sonning lost only two wickets during their innings — Hannah Brooks and Herrett — helping to minimise the dismissal penalties that are so crucial in this format.

Maidenhead & Bray's bowlers struggled with their accuracy, conceding 26 extras including 20 wides and 6 no-balls. Eva Johal was the only bowler to claim a wicket, finishing with 1 for 22 from her four overs, though her figures were inflated by eight wides and two no-balls. Michelle Jeyarajah, who had impressed with the bat, went for 24 from four overs without reward.

Jyothis's match-defining double of 1 for 9 with the ball and 22 with the bat proved the difference, earning Sonning six league points to Maidenhead & Bray's one and maintaining their progress in the Home Counties Women's Cricket League.
