Match Report

Sonning arrived at the rather run down Newbury cricket club hoping to get back on the winning trail after their disastrous loss against Burnham the previous week. Ghulam abbas was welcomed back after 3 weeks away, and in tandem with “Virginia Wade Johnston, bowled an excellent opening spell, to put the home side in serious trouble at 55 for 5 on a very green wicket. None of the Newbury batsmen could come to terms with the pace and movement except number 6 Duncan who hit the balls in his areas with great power , and managed to keep out the good balls with skill. It was entirely down to him that they managed to get a respectable 178 , which on the tricky wicket could have proved tough to get. Johnston bowled a marathon spell of 22 overs taking 5 for 69.

The Sonning innings started well with newbury dropping the ball short for skipper Phillips favourite (sorry only!) pull shot, and prolific hitter Richards batting with the caution the wicket warranted while despatching the bad balls with ease. When the skipper was out for 2, with the score on 84, it looked like the hard work had been done. However when Ian Boyton was out a few balls later for 4, the recently susceptible middle order were exposed again. A slight change in the batting order brought experienced JJ Harris in to join Richards, and despite, a couple of unsuccessful appeals(they were never out !), nerves were eased as Harris stroked the ball around, and the increasingly attacking Richards started smashing it to all parts. Harris started to hit the ball well, before realising Richards was approaching his century with only a few runs needed for victory. He finished the game with 2 boundaries which also brought up a well deserved 100, in the 31st over.

Overall this was a great win against a team above them in the league with good bowling and solid batting. However Newbury were nearly let off the hook after being in big trouble, and Sonning will have to get the killer instinct back to guarantee the promotion they crave.
