Match Report
Sonning 2nd XI Demolish Theale and Tilehurst with Dominant All-Round Display
Sonning 2nd XI produced a comprehensive victory away at Theale and Tilehurst in Division 6B of the Thames Valley Cricket League, posting an imposing 257 for 2 from their 40 overs before bowling out the hosts for just 84 in reply.
After Theale and Tilehurst won the toss and inserted Sonning into bat, the decision backfired spectacularly. Gerard Soames anchored the innings with a composed half-century, scoring 52 before falling lbw to Stuart Brown. Mannu Rawat contributed 24 before being caught off the same bowler, but these were the only two wickets Theale and Tilehurst could manage across the entire 40 overs. The unbeaten batsmen — whose individual contributions are not recorded in the scorecard — piled on runs with abandon to steer Sonning to their mammoth total. Brown was the sole bright spot for the hosts, returning figures of 2 for 32 from his seven overs, while the remainder of the attack suffered heavily. Abdullah Nadeem conceded 55 from his eight overs, Luke Shepherd went for 43 from seven, and George Coker leaked 36 from just four overs. Extras totalling 33, including 15 byes and eight wides, further compounded the hosts' woes.
The run chase was never a realistic prospect, and Adeel Chaudry ensured it became a formality with a devastating spell of bowling. Operating with pace and movement, Chaudry ripped through the Theale and Tilehurst top order, dismissing Micky Mehta bowled for 2, before having Charles Penman and Khadim Aslam both caught by the sharp-handed Rawat — who was enjoying a superb day in the field — for 0 and 1 respectively. He then bowled George Coker for a duck and trapped Sachin Rane lbw for 2 to complete a remarkable five-wicket haul, finishing with figures of 5 for 21 from eight overs with two maidens.
Oliver Rowe provided excellent support at the other end, maintaining pressure with his eight tidy overs and claiming the scalp of Luke Shepherd, who was the only Theale and Tilehurst batsman to offer meaningful resistance. Shepherd struck two fours and two sixes in a counter-attacking 23 before being caught by Rawat, giving the Sonning fielder his third catch of the innings.
With the hosts reeling, David Rowe and Indeveer Sahota finished the job in clinical fashion. David Rowe picked up two wickets in three overs, dismissing Andy Shotter — caught by Dan Anderson for 1 — and trapping Khalid Hussain lbw for 6. Sahota chipped in with the final two wickets, removing Abdullah Nadeem for 17, caught by Peter Compton-Burnett, and Stuart Brown for 10, pouched by wicketkeeper Paul Boyle, to wrap up the innings in just 22.4 overs.
The hosts were bowled out for 84, with captain Mike Hanham unable to bat as wickets tumbled around him. Nadeem top-scored with 17 and Brown added a late 10 including a four and a six, but the damage had been done long before the lower order offered brief resistance.
Captain Gary Phillips will be delighted with the performance of his bowling unit, which shared all ten wickets between four bowlers, and with Rawat's exceptional contribution in the field. The 173-run victory underlined the gulf between the sides on the day, with Sonning collecting 22 league points from a thoroughly dominant away performance.
