Match Report

Widanapathirana Century Guides Sonning to Victory in Run Chase

A magnificent century by Shamitha Widanapathirana powered Sonning Sunday As to a convincing seven-wicket win over Binfield at King George's Field. Chasing 228 for victory, Sonning reached their target with nearly 10 overs to spare thanks to Widanapathirana's sublime unbeaten 100.

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first, posting a competitive total of 227-8 from their 41 overs. While detailed bowling figures for Sonning aren't available, they managed to restrict Binfield to a manageable target despite batting-friendly conditions.

Sonning's chase began cautiously, suffering an early setback when Matthew Calhoum was bowled by Abinandan Venkatraman for just 4 runs with the score at 21. This brought Dan Anderson to join opener Widanapathirana, and the pair formed a crucial partnership to steady the innings.

Anderson played with controlled aggression, striking 11 boundaries in his 54 from 66 deliveries before falling to a catch off Max Wade's bowling. His partnership of 109 runs with Widanapathirana put Sonning firmly in control of the chase.

Jacob Fitton continued the momentum with a brisk 32 from just 28 deliveries, including three fours and a six. His partnership of 63 with Widanapathirana took Sonning to within touching distance of victory before he was bowled by Thomas Williams with the score at 193.

Widanapathirana remained the constant throughout the innings, reaching his century off just 70 balls with an impressive array of 18 boundaries and one six. His stroke play was exceptional, particularly against Gary Smith, whose four overs cost 45 runs without reward.

Louis Dean provided the finishing touches with an unbeaten 16 from 13 balls, hitting three boundaries as Sonning reached 233-3 in 30.1 overs. The Binfield bowlers struggled to contain the Sonning batsmen, with Abinandan Venkatraman's figures of 1-33 from seven overs being the most economical despite conceding 12 wides and three no-balls.
