Match Report
Mcloughlin's Magnificent 97 Not Enough as Sonning Fall Short at High Wycombe
Sonning 1st XI suffered a frustrating defeat in their Division 1B encounter at High Wycombe CC on Saturday, posting 210 for 8 from their 52 overs before the hosts chased down the target with five wickets in hand and just over two overs to spare.
Captain Peter Higginbottom won the toss and elected to bat, but Sonning's innings began in disastrous fashion. William Heyes was virtually unplayable in his opening spell of 6-2-21-3, removing Dhruv Peshkar (4), Mohammed Zahid (0) and Muhammad Ayub (0) in quick succession. Max Coker added to the early carnage by accounting for Amaad Ali, caught by J C Holmes for just 4, and Sonning found themselves reeling at 24 for 4.
What followed was one of the most remarkable recovery acts of the season. Alex Mcloughlin, who had watched three partners come and go at the other end, found a willing ally in Sid Anilkumar. The pair put on 84 for the fifth wicket, with Anilkumar contributing a fluent 38 from 56 balls featuring six boundaries. Mcloughlin, promoted to open the innings, was the anchor throughout, accumulating runs with patience and punishing anything loose through the covers.
Even after Anilkumar was run out by J C Holmes with the score on 108, Mcloughlin continued to battle. He added 21 with Shenul Widanapathirana and then 39 with skipper Higginbottom before finally falling for 97, caught by O U Sarwar off Max Coker. His innings of 130 balls included 14 fours and was the cornerstone of the entire Sonning effort. The agonising fall three runs short of a century will have stung, but his contribution was immense.
Higginbottom ensured the momentum was not lost, striking an unbeaten 44 from 48 balls with eight fours. A late cameo of 10 not out from Damario Goodman helped Sonning to a total of 210, which looked competitive given the early collapse. Max Coker finished with 3 for 55 from 11.1 overs, while S D Coker's 15 overs of spin yielded 1 for 63.
High Wycombe's reply got off to a brisk start as Sam Buckfield and Rohan Shukla put on 64 for the first wicket. Mohammed Zahid broke through twice, bowling Shukla for 20 and then having Buckfield caught by Goodman for an aggressive 41 that included six fours and a six. At 71 for 2, the match remained finely poised.
However, Senira Manikgamage seized control of the chase. He shared a stand of 58 with J C Holmes (32) for the third wicket and then added 67 with O U Sarwar for the fourth. Manikgamage's composed 61 from 84 balls, including six fours and a six, was the innings that ultimately decided the contest. Though Goodman claimed both Manikgamage and Holmes to finish with figures of 2 for 60 from his 15 overs, Sarwar remained unbeaten on 42 to steer High Wycombe home to 211 for 5 in 47.5 overs. Shenul Widanapathirana's tidy spell of 3-1-8-1 provided a bright spot, but Sonning were left to rue their early batting collapse which ultimately proved the difference in a match they had fought so hard to stay in.
