Kestrels Dominate Reading with Clinical All-Round Display

Sonning U9 Kestrels produced a commanding performance to defeat Reading Lions by 68 runs in the U9 Super 8s North West League at King George's Field on 2nd July 2023. After being asked to bat first following Reading's decision to field, the Kestrels posted an imposing 147 for 5 from their 20 overs before restricting the hosts to just 79 for 13 in reply.

The Kestrels' batting was characterised by consistent contributions throughout the order, with every batter reaching at least four runs. Jude Alden top-scored with an assured 19 from 17 balls, finding the boundary twice, while Aryaansh Rawat struck a fluent 18 off just 13 deliveries, hitting three fours to keep the scoreboard ticking over briskly. Ranbir Setia added 16, including the only six of the match, providing real impetus in the middle of the innings.

The top of the order set a solid foundation, with Ridith Kandadi contributing 15 from 13 balls and Oscar Williams hitting 14 off 11, both batters finding two boundaries apiece. Heet Panchal's brisk 13 from nine balls, Elijah Patterson's steady 10, and useful knocks of nine each from Reyansh Setia and Stanley Cox ensured the runs flowed throughout the innings. Reading's bowlers struggled for consistency, conceding 20 extras including 14 wides, with Angad Dosanjh the pick of their attack, claiming 2 for 15 from three overs.

The Kestrels' bowling effort was even more impressive, dismantling the Reading batting line-up with 13 wickets shared across the attack. Ridith Kandadi was the standout performer with the ball, returning outstanding figures of 3 for 3 from his two overs — a match-defining spell that strangled the opposition's scoring and broke through repeatedly.

Jude Alden complemented his batting contribution with 2 for 9 from two overs, while both Aryaansh Rawat (2-8) and Heet Panchal (2-3) claimed two wickets apiece. Panchal was particularly miserly, bowling a maiden in his spell, and captain Anay Patel also kept things tight with 1 for 3 from two overs, including a maiden of his own. Reyansh Setia deserves special mention for his remarkable economy, conceding just a single run from two overs while also bowling a maiden.

For Reading, Tarun Aadhva Mohandass showed the most resistance with the bat, scoring 15 from 16 balls including two fours, while captain Vihaan Aravind contributed 13 from 19 deliveries. However, the regular loss of wickets — 13 in total — made the required run rate increasingly unattainable, and the home side never looked like threatening the target. Jalpeen Kaur and Reesha Bharti each made seven, but no other Reading batter could get beyond five.

The comprehensive victory, built on the back of outstanding contributions from Kandadi, Alden, and Rawat with both bat and ball, underlined the depth and all-round capability of the Kestrels squad, with every member of the ten-strong team playing a meaningful role in the result.
