Sonning 4th XI Fall Short Despite Spirited Chase Against Dominant Eversley
Sonning 4th XI travelled to Yateley Manor School on Saturday for their Division 9C fixture against Eversley but were unable to overcome a mammoth first-innings total, ultimately falling 58 runs short in a match dominated by the bat.
Eversley captain Tony Critchley won the toss and elected to bat on what proved to be an excellent surface. After Isaac Blakey provided an early breakthrough, dismissing Muhammad Aziz caught for 5 with the score on 34, the home side's batsmen took complete command. Blakey was the only Sonning bowler to claim a wicket, finishing with figures of 1-49 from his seven overs, including a maiden — the most economical of the Sonning attack on a punishing afternoon.
Jonah Devanand and Oscar Tarry then produced an extraordinary unbroken second-wicket partnership that carried Eversley to an imposing 313 for 1 from their 40 overs. Tarry was the chief destroyer, compiling a magnificent 144 from 130 balls, lacing 26 fours in an innings of sustained aggression. Devanand was equally impressive at the other end, reaching 113 from 109 deliveries with 20 boundaries. The Sonning bowlers struggled for control, conceding 51 extras including 30 wides, with Piyanshu Desai (0-40 from four overs, including 12 wides) and Eshan Wang-Kumar (0-65 from seven overs, with 13 wides) finding accuracy particularly elusive.
Facing a target of 314, Sonning lost Elliot Dawes early, caught by wicketkeeper Ryan May off Jeevan Balija for 4 with just 12 on the board. Matthew Dawes and Shreyas Koppole then counter-attacked superbly, putting on 75 for the second wicket to give the chase real impetus. Dawes struck six fours in a brisk 34 from 32 balls before falling bowled to Critchley.
Critchley then produced a devastating spell that threatened to derail the Sonning innings entirely. Having removed Dawes, the Eversley skipper immediately accounted for Bharat Rathod, caught behind by May for a first-ball duck, to leave Sonning reeling at 87 for 3. Koppole continued to play with freedom, however, smashing seven fours and a six in a fluent 62 from 50 balls before Critchley completed his three-wicket haul when Reyansh Gandotra held the catch. Critchley's figures of 3-36 from eight overs, with a maiden, represented outstanding bowling on a flat pitch.
Captain Neel Kumar and Arun Raghavendra steadied the ship with a partnership of 49 for the fifth wicket. Kumar battled hard for his 30 from 65 balls before being caught by Muhammad Aziz off Oscar Tarry, but by that stage the required rate had climbed beyond reach. Raghavendra was the pick of the Sonning batsmen, remaining unbeaten on 58 from 55 balls with eight fours, while wicketkeeper Yusuf Malik contributed a useful 30 not out from 33 deliveries as the pair added an unbroken 86 for the sixth wicket.
Sonning closed on 255 for 5 from their 40 overs — a creditable total in isolation but insufficient to overhaul Eversley's mammoth score. The visitors did at least secure six bonus points, including five for batting, from a match in which they showed considerable fight with the bat despite being unable to contain two outstanding innings from Devanand and Tarry in the field.
