U9 Eagles Secure Victory at Wargrave Despite Spirited Home Resistance

Sonning U9 Eagles travelled to Wargrave Cricket Club on 23rd June and emerged victorious in this BYCL Under 9 Super 8s North West league encounter, successfully defending after restricting the home side's scoring power with a disciplined bowling display in the closing overs.

Wargrave won the toss and elected to bat first, with their line-up posting 150 runs from their 20 overs. In the pairs format starting from 200, the hosts lost 10 wickets, meaning significant deductions from their total. Horatio Hick was the standout performer with the bat for Wargrave, striking 22 off 15 balls with four boundaries, while Harrison Symes contributed a composed 20 from 18 deliveries. Ben Tilley also caught the eye with a fluent 19 off 15 balls, hitting four fours to keep the scoreboard ticking along nicely for the home side.

The pick of the Sonning bowling attack was undoubtedly Ranbir Setia, who produced a superb spell of 2-0-7-3, claiming three wickets without conceding a single wide or no ball. His economical and accurate bowling was instrumental in pegging back the Wargrave batting order. Captain Alexander Hatchett-Walker was equally tidy, returning figures of 2-0-6-1, while Henry Seadon chipped in with two wickets from his three overs despite being expensive. Arthur Teed and Aryaansh Rawat each claimed a wicket apiece to round off a solid collective effort.

In reply, Sonning's chase of the target was anchored by an outstanding innings from Aryaansh Rawat, who top-scored with 28 runs off 25 balls, including a boundary and two impressive sixes. His composure at the crease set the tone for the Eagles' response. Crucially, Rawat was not dismissed during his time at the wicket, ensuring no penalty runs were deducted against him.

Alexander Green provided excellent support with a brisk 21 off just 16 balls, finding the boundary rope twice and clearing it once for six. Green was dismissed four times during his innings, however, which added penalty deductions to the Sonning total. Opening batsman Ranbir Setia, fresh from his excellent bowling spell, contributed a steady 13 from 23 balls without being dismissed, offering valuable stability at the top of the order.

Kabir Bansode added a useful 8 from 15 balls further down the order, while captain Hatchett-Walker made 5 from 8 deliveries. Sonning finished on 144 from their 20 overs, losing seven wickets in total — three fewer dismissals than Wargrave had suffered, which proved to be the decisive margin in the pairs format.

The Wargrave bowling was spread across all ten players, with Ben Tilley, Arthur Haynes, Archie Shaw, Axel Angus, Aarav Kesare and Marco Van Rooyen each taking a wicket. However, the home side struggled with extras, conceding 60 in total including 30 wides and 14 no balls, which bolstered the Sonning innings considerably.

The Eagles' triumph was built on two pillars: Setia's outstanding three-wicket spell that restricted Wargrave's scoring, and Rawat's unbeaten 28 that formed the backbone of the run chase. It was a well-rounded team performance from Sonning, with contributions across both disciplines securing the two league points on offer.
