Match Report
Eagles Fall Short as Wargrave Claim Victory at Kings Field
Sonning U9 Eagles travelled to Kings Field on 20th May to face Wargrave in the BYCL Under 9 Super 8s North West league, and despite posting a competitive total of 127, the visitors were unable to defend it as the hosts chased down the target to finish on 138 for 7.
Captain Jacob Burkinshaw led from the front after winning the toss and electing to bat, top-scoring with 12 runs from 24 balls, including two boundaries. Ghosh Nag Ziko matched that tally with 12 runs of his own from 20 deliveries, providing the backbone of the Eagles' batting effort. Yeshwin Saimpu contributed a useful 9 from 19 balls with a four, while Ibrahim Jafri added 7 from 18 balls, also finding the boundary once.
The Eagles' total was bolstered significantly by 87 extras, with 73 of those coming from wides as the Wargrave bowling attack struggled with their accuracy. The hosts used all ten of their players with the ball, though none managed to be truly economical. Gordon Cowin, Blake Bennett, and Ralph Mcmahon each claimed a wicket apiece, while Montgomery Hick also picked up a scalp, providing Wargrave with regular breakthroughs that prevented the Eagles from accelerating further.
In reply, Wargrave's batting was more evenly spread across their line-up. Gordon Cowin was the standout performer with 13 runs from 15 balls, striking three fours in an aggressive display. Montgomery Hick matched that total with 13 from 17 deliveries, clearing the boundary for six along the way. Thomas Peebles chipped in with a brisk 11 from just 10 balls, hitting two fours, and his contribution proved crucial in keeping the home side ahead of the required rate.
The Eagles worked hard with the ball, taking seven wickets between them. Ibrahim Jafri delivered the most economical spell of the match, conceding just 2 runs from his single over while claiming a wicket. Leo Draper bowled three overs for 11 runs and a wicket, while Yeshwin Saimpu also picked up a scalp from his three-over spell, conceding 14 runs. Leo E grabbed a wicket as well, and Nathaniel Hearsey completed the wicket-taking quartet.
However, 70 extras in the Wargrave innings — including 47 wides and 16 no-balls — proved costly for Sonning. Despite the Eagles' efforts in picking up regular wickets, the additional runs from extras handed the hosts momentum they never relinquished. Ghosh Nag Ziko was notably tidy, bowling three overs for 19 runs without conceding a single wide or no-ball, but he was unable to make a breakthrough.
Wargrave ultimately reached 138, surpassing the Eagles' total by 11 runs to claim the league points. For Sonning, there were encouraging individual performances with bat and ball, but greater discipline with extras will be the key area to address heading into their next fixture.
