U9 Falcons Chase Down 85 with Commanding Display at King George's Field
Sonning U9 Falcons secured a convincing victory over Finchampstead in their BYCL Under 9 Super 8s Central league fixture on 15 July, chasing down 85 with a total of 126 for 6 from their 16 overs at King George's Field.
Finchampstead won the toss and elected to bat first, but were kept in check by a disciplined Sonning bowling attack that shared four wickets across the innings. Abdul-Ahad Baig set the tone with an outstanding spell of 2-5 from his two overs, including a maiden — a remarkable achievement at this age group. His early wicket put the visitors on the back foot from the outset and established control that Sonning maintained throughout.
Jude Walker provided the most resistance for Finchampstead, striking an enterprising 13 from 11 balls that included a four and a six, the only maximum of the visitors' innings. Captain Rafferty Robinson contributed 8 from 17 deliveries, while Vivaan Holani added a brisk 6 from 7 balls. However, no other batter managed more than 4, and with 49 extras making up more than half their total, the visitors struggled to find fluency against Sonning's bowling.
Max Chapman delivered a tidy spell of 2-4-1 from his two overs, while Jake Burkinshaw and Ibrahim Jafri each claimed a wicket apiece to ensure Finchampstead were limited to 85 for 4. Kayen Singh Rekhi was also economical, conceding just 5 runs from his two overs without being hit for a boundary.
The Sonning reply was spearheaded by Abdul-Ahad Baig, who backed up his superb bowling with an outstanding knock of 21 from 14 balls. Baig struck three fours and cleared the ropes for a six, playing with authority and intent from the first ball. His all-round contribution was the standout individual performance of the evening.
Max Chapman continued his fine match with a useful 11 from 13 balls lower down the order, finding the boundary once and keeping the scoreboard ticking. Captain Ahmad Naqash made 7 from 13 deliveries, while Kayen Singh Rekhi matched that tally with 7 from 10 balls, ensuring Sonning's batting effort was a genuine team performance with contributions throughout.
Finchampstead's bowlers toiled hard, with James Tulley the pick, taking 2-9 from his two overs. Bella Chib bowled a maiden amongst her two overs and claimed a wicket, while Leo Ellis and Aryan B also struck once each. However, 71 extras in the Sonning innings — including 43 wides — proved costly and allowed the home side to pull well clear of the target, finishing on 126 for 6 and claiming a comfortable 41-run victory.
