Match Report

Spartans Fall Short as Henley's Oscar Little Stars with 43 at Coppid Hall

Sonning U11 Spartans travelled to Prestcold CC for this BYCL Under 11 Challenge fixture knowing they faced a stern test against Henley's Lynx, and so it proved as the hosts posted 104 for 8 before bowling out the Spartans for 89 to claim victory.

Henley won the toss and chose to bat, and it was Oscar Little who dominated the first innings with a superb knock of 43 from just 28 balls, striking nine fours in an innings that proved the difference between the two sides. Captain Oscar Keeling contributed 10 from 12 balls at the top of the order, while Humph Armstrong added a useful 15 from 17 deliveries to give Henley a platform of substance.

The Spartans' bowlers worked hard to contain the scoring and shared eight wickets around. Jonathan Turner was the pick of the attack, claiming 3 for 19 from his three overs, while Ridith Kandadi bowled with excellent economy to return figures of 2 for 10 from three overs. Alexander Hatchett-Walker chipped in with 2 for 10 from two overs, and Ranbir Setia added a wicket of his own with tidy figures of 1 for 7. The 22 extras conceded, however, provided Henley with a valuable boost to their total.

Chasing 105 for victory, the Spartans needed a strong start and Alexander Hatchett-Walker provided one, hitting 10 from nine balls at the top of the order. Ranbir Setia was the standout with the bat, top-scoring with 16 from 15 balls including two fours, while captain Lewis Towner played an enterprising innings of 13 from 13 deliveries, finding the boundary three times.

The middle order struggled to build on promising starts, with Seve Horton, Ridith Kandadi, and Jonathan Turner each managing five runs apiece. Ruby Cross contributed six, but Isabella Partridge was unable to trouble the scorers, finishing on nought from 13 balls as the Spartans lost ten wickets across their 16 overs.

Henley captain Oscar Keeling proved as effective with the ball as he was with the bat, taking 4 for 16 from three overs to dismantle the Spartans' middle and lower order. Humph Armstrong supported well with 2 for 14 from three overs, while Oscar Little added two wickets to his earlier batting heroics. Nathanael O'Hare and Ollie Buff both bowled maiden overs to keep the pressure on throughout.

The Spartans' total of 89 included 34 extras — a significant proportion of their runs — but ultimately the deficit of 15 runs reflected the dominance of Oscar Little's batting and the collective discipline of Henley's bowling attack on an evening where the visitors were unable to find the sustained partnerships needed to overhaul the target.
