Kestrels Held to a Tie After Spirited Bowling Display at Maidenhead
Sonning U9 Kestrels were left to reflect on what might have been after a tense BYCL Under 9 Super 8s encounter at Maidenhead and Bray Cricket Club ended in a tie on 29 June, with the hosts finishing on 99 runs to the Kestrels' 89 under the pairs format's scoring system.
Captain Arthur Miles won the toss and elected to bat first, but the Kestrels' innings got off to a slow start. Sai Sathvik Cherukuri managed just 2 from 9 balls at the top of the order, and the visitors needed someone to inject momentum. That responsibility fell to Kabir Nair Bansode, who produced the standout batting performance of the innings with a fluent 18 from 13 balls, including two fours and an impressive six — the only maximum of the entire match. Maurya Chirunamala provided useful support with 14 off 15 deliveries, striking three boundaries to keep the scoreboard ticking.
Arthur Miles contributed a steady 10 from 16 balls lower down the order, but the middle and lower portions of the innings struggled for rhythm. Jenu Babu found runs particularly hard to come by, managing just 2 from 17 balls as the Maidenhead bowlers applied pressure. Rufus Anderson was the pick of the home attack, delivering a superb spell of 2-1-1-1 that included a maiden over, while Atharva Jadhav claimed two wickets for 11 runs. The Kestrels posted 89 for 5 from their 16 overs, boosted by 35 extras including 20 wides.
Maidenhead's reply got off to a blistering start through Rufus Anderson, who backed up his excellent bowling with the top score of the match — 18 from just 14 balls, rattling four boundaries. At the other end, Ethan Porter added 5 before being dismissed twice, but the damage had been done early as the home side built a strong platform.
The Kestrels fought back admirably with the ball through a four-pronged wicket-taking attack. Zachary Plumber was particularly effective, picking up 2 for 12 from his two overs, while Maurya Chirunamala matched that return with 2 for 7 — the most economical spell of the Sonning bowling effort. Captain Miles led from the front with 2 for 7 of his own, and Kabir Nair Bansode completed his fine all-round display with 1 for 14 to open the bowling.
Despite taking seven wickets — two more than Maidenhead had managed — the Kestrels were unable to stem the flow of runs entirely. Finlay Admans struck a punchy 12 off 13 balls with two fours in the middle order, and Atharva Jadhav continued his excellent personal match with an unbeaten 13 from 17 deliveries. Isla Brown chipped in with 9, and the hosts' batting contributions were spread more evenly across the card. Maidenhead's extras tally of 32 was marginally lower than Sonning's, though the Kestrels' bowlers conceded 13 wides and 8 no-balls between them.
The tie meant both sides collected one league point apiece. Inara Ahmed deserved credit for a tidy spell of 2-0-6-0, the most economical of either bowling attack, while the all-round contributions of Kabir Nair Bansode and Maurya Chirunamala underlined the depth of talent in this young Kestrels squad.
