Match Report

Sonning romp home for a hatrick of wins!

Made on a “pudding of a track due to the recent wet weather, chasing Peppard’s total of 101, was always a potential banana skin. That we passed their target with 37 overs to spare was a tribute to a mixture of punishing the bad ball and a watchful defence by our batters. Victory by 7 wickets, the third win on the bounce, should move us up to 4th in the league.

After five matches the team is starting to have a more settled look, we welcomed Matt Evans for his first game of the season and the return of Don Wilmott after two weeks absence.

Don and Waqas shared the new ball duties with Don, who save for a couple of loose deliveries, was back to his miserly, accurate self taking 3 for 19 from his 12 over spell. Waqas generated good pace and a number of kicking deliveries which on another day might have taken wickets, he was also unlucky as two chances were spilled in the slips. A couple of wild deliveries detracted somewhat from commendable figures of 7 overs for 19 runs. Waqas made way for Matt who generated excellent pace and bowled a good line and length. None of the Peppard batsmen were at ease and his 6 over spell cost just 8 runs and the wicket of Alan Bryan, their captain and opener, who had stuck around for 20 overs and was starting to play some well timed shots. Jack Hudson replaced Don and immediately started putting the ball in the “right areas. Playing his second game for the club, he appears to be settling in well after a solid debut with the ball last week. With his confidence increasing his pace improved and figures of 3 for 18 off 6 overs did justice to his accurate spell. Wickets were now falling at regular intervals and 98 for 8 quickly became 101 all out with Naqash picking up the last 2 wickets for no runs.

With a low total to defend, their captain deployed an attacking field with 6 close catchers including a silly mid off and on. Unperturbed, Ali Driver calmly clipped his second delivery for 2 and with further singles the innings got off to a solid start. Unluckily in the fourth over Ali played-on to a delivery which kept a little low. The second ball Freddie Travers faced, batting at three, was a little short and “stood up to be hit. The resultant 6 was struck with such power that it flat lined some 12 foot off the ground, straight into a hedge some 60 yards away. After much searching, the ball was given up as lost. Whilst this provided some entertainment for the spectators and players another of a more hilarious nature followed in the next over. Naqash, famed for his dodgy calling and running between the wickets set off to the danger end for a third run which was comfortably there. This however did not take account of Naqash’s cross legged running style, causing him to trip and fall to the ground some 10 feet short of the popping crease. By this time the ball had been returned to the bowler, who caught it, and, standing with his back to the stumps only had to turn round and whip the bails off with ball in hand. Naqash seeing the imminent demise of his innings decided to throw his bat across the popping crease presumably in the hope that this might sway the umpire into a not out decision! As it transpired he needn’t have bothered as the bowler opted to hurl the ball and in the process missing the stumps comfortably! After much laughing and swearing Freddie carried on accumulating runs at speed but then fell caught and bowled for 16. 22 for 2 immediately became 22 for 3 as Pieter Olberholzer was bowled playing back to a ball which kept low. Tea was immediately taken, with Peppard player’s spirits high.

After a watchful start, Matt, ably supported by Naqash quickly quietened the enthusiasm of the opposition amongst a flurry of boundaries. Spinners were brought into the attack but after quickly adjusting to the lack of pace, the tempo of the innings carried on. Naqash played some well timed shots off his back foot through the off-side, whilst Matt manoeuvred the ball all round the wicket racing to 47 not out. Naqash hit the winning runs in the nineteenth over of the innings, leaving him 37 not out.

A great victory lads and it was good to see many of us at the local pub after the game sharing the good feeling of victory [and the beers Freddie bought everyone at the Unicorn was with my money…….so you owe me not him!!!]
