Match Report

Rita Green's Explosive Knock Powers Sonning Women to Commanding Victory

Sonning Women's 1st XI posted a comprehensive win over Wargrave in their Super 8 Development Group 4 fixture at Emmbrook and Bearwood CC on Sunday, defending a total of 103 for 4 with disciplined bowling to restrict the visitors to just 64 for 3 from their 16 overs.

Having been sent in to bat after Wargrave captain Ashleigh Fido won the toss and elected to field, Sonning made a solid start through opener Chloe Bailey, who struck three fours in a brisk 15 off 17 balls. Elizabeth Van Deventer complemented her at the top of the order with a quick-fire 9 from just 7 deliveries, including a boundary, as the pair gave Sonning early momentum.

The middle order found runs harder to come by, with captain Katie Barrows grafting for 4 off 19 balls and Frances Howson contributing 4 from 14. Grace Phillips and Elinor Longridge added useful cameos, but it was the lower order that truly ignited the Sonning innings. Rita Green produced a devastating display, smashing 23 off just 13 balls with three fours and a six — comfortably the highest individual score of the match. Green's assault was primarily directed at Laanya Rupasinha, who bore the brunt of the late onslaught, conceding 36 runs from her four overs despite claiming two wickets. Geethika Jyothis provided excellent support alongside Green, striking 15 off 11 balls with two boundaries to ensure Sonning finished with a competitive total. Extras also played a significant part, with 26 added to the total including 10 wides and 10 no-balls from a wayward Wargrave attack.

In reply, Wargrave never looked likely to threaten the target. Srishaa Ganagabalan top-scored with 10 off 11 balls at the top of the order, while Georgia Harsham offered late resistance with 11 from 14 deliveries batting at number seven. Captain Fido made 7 from 8 balls before being dismissed — one of three wickets to fall — and Sophie Hucker scratched around for 5 off 16 balls without being able to accelerate.

Sonning's bowling effort was a genuine team performance, with seven bowlers used across the 16 overs. Grace Phillips was the pick of the attack, claiming 1 for 12 from her three overs, while Geethika Jyothis was impressively economical, conceding just 8 runs from three overs without a single wide or no-ball. The outstanding individual bowling figures, however, belonged to Elizabeth Van Deventer, who returned remarkable figures of 3-1-2-0 — her maiden over a particular highlight as she suffocated the Wargrave batting in the middle overs.

The combination of tight bowling and Wargrave's inability to find the boundary with any regularity meant the required run rate climbed steadily beyond reach. With only 46 runs from the bat and 18 extras making up their total, Wargrave fell 39 runs short in what proved a thoroughly one-sided contest.

Sonning collected six league points from the victory, leaving Wargrave with a solitary point to show for their afternoon's efforts.
