U13 Sharks Fall Just Short as Extras-Laden Contest Goes Shinfield's Way

Sonning U13 Sharks posted 113 all out before Shinfield chased down the target with nine wickets down in a BYCL Under 13 Challenge match at Manor Ground Sports Facility on 24th May. A combined 108 extras across both innings told the story of a contest where discipline with the ball proved elusive for both sides, though Shinfield ultimately had enough to edge home.

Inserted into bat after Shinfield won the toss, the Sharks found themselves in early trouble. Finley Andrews was run out by Arjav Maity for 5, and wicketkeeper Jamie Dollinger fell bowled to Maity for 7, leaving Sonning 16 for 2. The situation deteriorated further when Divik Gupta was bowled by Ishaan Iyengar for just 1 from 14 balls, and captain Namit Desai was trapped lbw by Maity for 2 — both wickets falling with the score on 20. At 20 for 4, the Sharks were in deep difficulty.

Izaan Baloch and Aarib Ansari staged the innings' most important rescue act, putting on 38 for the fifth wicket. Baloch struck two fours in his 14 from 15 balls, while Ansari contributed a busy 10 from 14 deliveries before being caught by Atharva Singh off Krish Keshari. Their partnership hauled Sonning from crisis to something approaching respectability, lifting the total to 58 before Ansari's departure.

The innings' most fluent contribution came from number seven Utkarsh Sinha, who top-scored with an excellent 22 from 23 balls, striking four boundaries. Sinha added 22 with Sashreek Beesarla for the eighth wicket, carrying the score from 74 to 96 before Beesarla was run out. Sinha was eventually bowled by Maity, whose figures of 4 for 11 from 2.3 overs represented a devastating spell. The Sharks were bowled out for 113 in 18.3 overs, with 49 extras — including 30 wides — providing a significant proportion of the total.

Shinfield's reply began poorly as Namit Desai struck in the third ball, bowling Kruthik Murthy for a duck. Sharvil Taur and Raman Vedam then steadied the chase with a partnership of 25 for the second wicket before Jamie Dollinger bowled Taur for 5 and had Shinfield captain Abhinav Jain caught for a golden duck in quick succession, leaving the hosts 27 for 3.

Dollinger's outstanding spell of 3 for 5 from three overs kept Sonning firmly in the contest, while Aarib Ansari delivered a miserly three overs that yielded just 6 runs and the wicket of Pranav Chitta lbw for 5. Desai complemented his earlier wicket by having Arjav Maity caught — off his own bowling — and then bowling Atharva Singh to finish with 3 for 12 from his three overs, including a maiden. Rayyan Khan Jadoon also contributed, taking a fine caught-and-bowled to dismiss Krish Keshari for 5.

Despite taking nine wickets and applying sustained pressure, the Sharks were undone by extras. Shinfield's second innings included 59 extras — 31 wides and 20 no-balls — which effectively rendered the target academic. Raman Vedam anchored the chase with an unbeaten 11 from 26 balls, while Advait Patil made 10 and Ishaan Iyengar finished 10 not out. Though Shinfield tumbled from 87 for 5 to 110 for 9, the damage from extras had already been done, and they reached 114 to secure the win. For the Sharks, it was a match where outstanding individual bowling performances from Dollinger and Desai deserved a better outcome.
