Match Report

Shah's Sensational 138 Powers Sonning 3rd XI to Emphatic Victory Over Kidmore End

Hassan Shah produced a breathtaking innings of 138 from just 93 balls as Sonning 3rd XI amassed a mammoth 334 for 5 before bowling out Kidmore End for 116 at Waingels College in Division 8B on Saturday.

Captain Arun Kumar Pera won the toss and elected to bat on what proved to be an excellent surface, and his decision was vindicated almost immediately as openers Aseem Shafi and Shah set about the Kidmore End attack with intent. The pair constructed a magnificent opening stand of 152, with Shafi playing the anchor role superbly for his 31 off 60 balls while Shah blazed away at the other end. By the time Shafi was caught by Sanjeev Sadhwani off Mark Baker's bowling, the platform was firmly established.

Shah continued his onslaught after Shafi's departure, peppering the boundary with 20 fours and clearing it five times in an innings of sheer dominance. He put on a further 72 with Rahul Sood for the second wicket before Ethan De Savoye finally got one through his defences to end an extraordinary knock. The Kidmore End bowlers had no answers, with nine bowlers used in total and none recording a maiden over. Roan Coetzee was the pick of the attack with 2 for 48 from his eight overs.

Sood maintained the tempo brilliantly, striking 54 from 39 deliveries with seven fours and two sixes before falling to Coetzee with the score on 292. Shamitha Widanapathirana then carried the momentum through to the close of the innings, finishing unbeaten on 52 from just 35 balls, an innings laced with seven boundaries. Skipper Pera chipped in with a breezy 23 off 14 balls as Sonning plundered 110 runs from their final ten overs. The Kidmore End extras column told its own story — 36 in total including 23 wides — as discipline deserted them under relentless pressure.

Facing a target of 335, Kidmore End's reply never gained any traction. Asad Imam struck early, having Mark Baker caught for 4 with the score on just 6, and then removed Nathan Salisbury to leave the visitors 26 for 2. Max Murphy was equally impressive from the other end, bowling De Savoye for 10 and then dismissing opposition captain Will Nassau-Lake for 1 as Kidmore End slumped to 34 for 4.

Sam Taylor continued the squeeze in the middle overs, claiming 2 for 13 from six disciplined overs including two maidens, removing Nathan Ruegg and Abhijeet Vardhan — the latter caught behind by wicketkeeper Daniel Edwards — as Kidmore End collapsed to 43 for 6. Sadhwani showed some resistance with 15 from 61 balls, but it was little more than a rearguard action as the required run rate climbed beyond reach.

Roan Coetzee provided the only real fireworks in the Kidmore End innings, striking an unbeaten 29 from 28 balls with three fours and a six, adding 34 for the eighth wicket with Merlin Meyer, who contributed a useful 19. However, Widanapathirana capped a superb all-round display by ripping through the tail, taking 3 for 1 from just 1.1 overs, including a caught-and-bowled to dismiss Fletcher Baker-Smith, before trapping David Salisbury lbw to wrap up the innings and seal a comprehensive 218-run victory for Sonning.

The win earned Sonning 22 league points, with seven bowlers used in a well-managed defensive effort that saw Kidmore End dismissed in 33.1 overs. Shah's magnificent century will live long in the memory, but this was a complete team performance from a side firing on all cylinders in Division 8B.
