Match Report

Again Sonning outclassed their opposition on Saturday to continue their 100% record in the league so far this season. Gary Philips continued his record of winning the toss in every game this season and again opted to field, feeling that a bit of recent moisture on the wicket would result in early movement for the seamers. This may have been the case, but it was more the extreme pace of Cameron Gannon that gave Chesham early problems and 4 early wickets had them in real trouble. Unfortunately Abbas again had injury problems and could only complete a couple of overs before coming off. Parr, Boyton and Troughton all chipped in with wickets and with Gannon picking up another in his second spell to end with figures of 5 for 21 from 8.2 overs, Chesham were all out for 93. This may have been slightly less but for a couple of sharp dropped slip chances by Scott “Gripper Stevens!

Richards and Philips went to the wicket to find the Chesham Skipper tossing the ball to 2 spinners as apparently the ball was turning square while he had batted. I think there may be something wrong with his eyes, and it was a decision he regretted as Richards again belted the ball to all parts, and progressed the score to 49 by the time the new ball was taken by 2 of the sharpest looking bowlers we have seen all season! Despite a few false shots both openers continued to hit the ball well and the target was passed in the 15th over with Richards on 58 including 14 fours and Philips on 31.

Sonning have now beaten every other team in the league over the first half of the season, opening up a 32 point lead over second placed Purley and 65 points over 3rd placed Maidenhead and Bray. Hopefully the chances to bat first will come in the second half of the season to give the strong lower and middle order batters a chance to shine. Maybe this will result in some more interesting games as the numerous mismatches that have occurred in the first half of the season have not been much fun for either team.
