Match Report

Peter Dean's Magnificent 82 Steers Sonning 2nds to Comfortable Victory at Aldershot

Sonning 2nd XI travelled to Aldershot Cricket Club on 5th September and delivered a composed all-round display to secure a well-deserved victory in their Division 6B encounter. Captain Gary Phillips won the toss and elected to bat, a decision vindicated by opener Peter Dean's outstanding knock of 82 that formed the backbone of Sonning's imposing total of 210 for 7 from their allotted 40 overs.

Dean took charge from the outset, anchoring the Sonning innings while wickets fell around him at the other end. Gerard Soames departed early for just 5, bowled by Joe Parker, but Duncan Parr provided excellent support with a fluent 32 before being caught by Andy Summers off the same bowler's delivery. The partnership between Dean and Parr steadied the innings and laid a platform for the middle order to capitalise upon.

Louis Dean contributed a useful 26 before falling bowled to Summers, while Dan Anderson chipped in with 10 before being caught. Peter Dean's resistance was eventually ended when he was caught by wicketkeeper Andrew Taylor off the bowling of Sam Armes, having compiled a match-defining innings. The extras column also proved significant, with 30 extras — including 21 wides — bolstering the Sonning total considerably. For Aldershot, Sameer Khara was the most economical bowler, conceding just 27 runs from his eight overs with three maidens, while Summers claimed 2 for 48 from his full allocation.

Aldershot's reply started poorly as Oliver Rowe bowled Sean McCafferty for 6, and Stuart Tidbury had Moumer Khara caught by Rowe for a duck. The home side found themselves under immediate pressure with their top order exposed. Captain Andrew Taylor attempted to rebuild, compiling a patient 36 before being bowled by Duncan Parr, but it was Marc Davies who posed the greatest threat to Sonning's victory hopes.

Davies played a superb counter-attacking innings of 84, keeping Aldershot in the contest almost single-handedly. He found little support from the other end, however, as Parr ripped through the middle order with devastating effect. Jon Ford was caught by Phillips off Parr for a duck, and Sam Armes followed immediately, caught behind by Paul Boyle, also off Parr's bowling, to give the all-rounder figures of 3 for 43 from his eight overs.

David Rowe's tidy spell of 8-1-20-1 applied further pressure, removing George Morten for just 1, while Peter Compton-Burnett chipped in with the wicket of Andy Summers, bowled for 8. With the game slipping away from Aldershot, Dan Anderson proved the unlikely hero with the ball, taking 3 wickets for 21 from just 2.4 overs to wrap up the tail. Joe Parker was stumped by Boyle for 14 off Anderson's bowling, and Niall Fanshawe was caught by Oliver Rowe to bring proceedings to a close, Aldershot bowled out for 171 in 36.4 overs — 39 runs short of the target.

Oliver Rowe deserved particular mention for his excellent contribution in the field, taking three catches across the Aldershot innings, while wicketkeeper Boyle was involved in two dismissals behind the stumps. The victory, secured by a margin of 39 runs, underlined the depth and balance of Sonning's squad, with contributions across the batting order complemented by a disciplined six-man bowling attack that shared the wickets effectively.
