Match Report

Extract from the Farnham Common Messenger Monday 21st July 2008-07-21

The Sonning Seconds roadshow rocked into our sleepy Hamlet on Saturday to take on our cricket team in an eagerly anticipated contest. The village was bedecked with bunting and flags and the villagers were out in force to welcome the "2's" from Sonning. The Mayor and his partner welcomed Cap'n Ted Baker and his team to Farnham and after lunch and a few short speeches the game got underway. A ceremony in the clubhouse to celebrate the 14th Birthday of one of the Common team was well attended by friends and family and the young man posed for pictures for our esteemed organ ( see page 34 ).

Cap'n Ted won the toss and without hesitation batted. A solid opening of 50 or so from the openers was broken when Benning was bowled which brought the young South African Retief to the crease. A good partnership between the elder statesman and the young pretender took the score to 110 until Retief played a dreadful shot and was caught for 35. Smith soon followed and Sonning were wobbling at 126 for 3. Cap'n Ted was out for a dozen, Snake bagged a duck, and the "2's" were in trouble at 140 for 5. Harvey and Phil however rescued Sonning with a partnership which put the "2's" in a very strong position as they added 91 for the 6th wicket and saw the visitors to a very respectable 237. The Common bowlers struggled to find a consistent line and length and were soundly punished for some wayward bowling.

Tea was taken and the crowd were expecting a good second half to the contest.

Harvey "too short " Grout and Andy Benning opened the bowling as the Birthday boy arrived at the crease. The crowd stood as one to welcome the young man to the crease and wish him luck on his 14th Birthday.

Grout running down the hill with the wind behind unleashed a vicious short delivery at Birthday Boy to unsettle him and unfortunately for young Lochinvar as he was turning away from the delivery the ball crashed into his exposed elbow with a sickening thud ricocheted over the top of the keeper and ran away to the boundary . " The umpire gave that as runs " said Harvey incredulously " should have been leg byes ", as our young Birthday boy was helped off the field in tears by a couple of St Johns ambulance brigade. " Should have been leg xxxxxxx byes" chundered Harvey as he walked back to the beginning of his run up seething with rage.

Soon wickets began to fall and all the Sonning bowlers capitalised on some inexperienced batting and the "2's" were cruising to a comfortable win. A fine spell of bowling from Benning ( 4 wickets ) and Le Beouf ( 3 wickets ) tore out the middle of the Common batting line up and the game was over as a contest. The Common batsmen did however show some resistance in the lower order. The number 11 batsmen came to the crease and batted one handed after an injury he sustained while fielding prevented him coming in higher up the order. The other batsmen was our brave young birthday boy who had previously been roughed up by Harvey. " I'll bowl at the number 11 with the one hand " growled Grout and was tossed the ball by Cap'n Ted. A couple of overs later and 24 more in the runs against column in Harveys figures had the crowd in raptures, cheering and applauding every time one of Harveys deliverys was despatched to the boundary. " They're taking the piss now " Harvey moaned to the umpire " it's not fair ". The final wicket pairing added 35 runs with young Lochinvar last man out for a very well made 65. Victory by 54 runs was probably a little closer than the "2's" might have expected at one stage but victory it was.

So the Sonning machine keeps on rolling and another good win has kept them in contention for the title.
