Match Report

Zameer's Blistering 79 Seals Emphatic Sonning Win

Sonning's 3rd XI made light work of a target of 167 at home to Cookham Dean, romping to a six-wicket victory with 16.2 overs still in hand thanks to a superb third-wicket stand of 117 between Shamitha Widanapathirana and Muhammad Zameer.

Cookham Dean had won the toss and chosen to bat, but the decision brought little early comfort. Danyal Mumtaz was trapped lbw with the score still on nought, and the visitors were repeatedly pegged back as Sonning's four bowlers kept a tight grip on proceedings. Lashvein Srisankar batted attractively for 19 and James Le Fleming struck a brisk 14 before both fell, and Mike Cutting's stay lasted a single ball.

The innings was held together by J Milligan, who compiled a patient half-century, more than half of his runs coming in boundaries, and by the time he was caught the visitors had at least given themselves a total to defend. From 84 for seven, Cookham Dean recovered handsomely through a spirited 67-run eighth-wicket partnership between Milligan and Jamie Taylor, the latter contributing a determined 31 that dragged the innings past 150. They were eventually bowled out for 166 in 38 overs.

Mehar Ali Kaleem was the pick of the Sonning attack, returning four wickets for 43 from his full ten overs, one of them a maiden. Michael Longridge took three for 30 in eight economical overs, Shahid Imtiaz claimed two, and Muhammad Zameer bowled ten overs for 36 with a pair of maidens, work that would be entirely overshadowed by what came later.

The reply began awkwardly. Sonning lost two wickets inside the opening exchanges, Wazir Khan giving Widanapathirana solid company for a 38-run second-wicket stand before being pinned lbw, and James Le Fleming's new-ball spell briefly threatened to make a contest of it. What followed removed any doubt.

Widanapathirana played the anchor with real class, striking nine fours in his 59 and giving the innings its backbone, while Zameer simply took the game away from the visitors. His 79 came from 45 balls at a strike rate of 175, twelve fours and three sixes flowing to all parts, and by the time the pair were separated at 156 the target was in sight. Zameer fell four short of the finish, leaving William Hibberdine and Mohamad Shahbaz to knock off the remainder as Sonning closed on 170 for four, scoring at better than seven an over throughout.

Thomas Hepworth took two wickets in a short spell in the closing stages, but by then the outcome was settled. It was a complete team performance: disciplined bowling that never let Cookham Dean build, sharp catching in support, and a chase built on one substantial partnership and one innings of genuine power.
