Scorchers Fall 30 Runs Short as Reyburn's Fifty Steers Peppard Stoke Row to Cup Victory

Sonning U15 Scorchers were eliminated from the U15 Cup – West Zone after falling to a 30-run defeat against Peppard Stoke Row at The Oratory School on 17 May. Captain Tom Wolfenden won the toss and opted to field first, but the home side's batting, anchored by a superb half-century from Scott Reyburn, proved too much for the Scorchers to chase down.

Reyburn was the star of the Peppard Stoke Row innings, compiling an unbeaten 50 from 43 balls laced with 11 fours before retiring. He was involved in two productive partnerships at the top of the order, first putting on 38 for the opening wicket with captain Dominic Ellis, who struck a brisk 17 from 13 balls before being bowled by Neil Jasti. Reyburn then added 33 with William Davies for the second wicket before Reyansh Setia removed Davies for 9 to give the Scorchers brief respite.

The crucial passage of the first innings came when Oscar Williams joined the middle order and forged a commanding 65-run stand for the third wicket alongside Trystan Davies. Williams contributed a measured 25 from 28 balls before being run out by a sharp piece of fielding from Kishan Akula, while Davies struck a purposeful 20 from 18 deliveries before Wolfenden cleaned him up. The late flurry took Peppard Stoke Row to a formidable 147 for 4 from their 20 overs, with 19 extras further boosting the total.

The Scorchers' bowling attack was spread across nine bowlers, with Wolfenden the most economical of those who bowled multiple overs, returning figures of 1 for 14 from his four. Setia chipped in with 1 for 16 from three overs and Jasti claimed the other wicket, though he was expensive at 34 from his three overs. Eshan Wang-Kumar, Akula, and Shubh Vedalanakar all bowled tidy spells of two overs apiece without reward.

The Scorchers' reply got off to an unsteady start, slipping to 6 for 1 when Neil Jasti was bowled by George Craven for just 1. Kanishka Suriarachchi hung around for 5 from 17 balls before falling caught by Ellis off Louis Warner, leaving the score at 29 for 2. It was Akula who injected urgency into the chase, striking three fours in a fluent 25 from 20 balls and sharing a 23-run stand with Suriarachchi for the second wicket. Akula added a further 24 with Shreyas Koppole before being trapped lbw by Louis Savage with the score on 53.

Koppole and Wolfenden kept the Scorchers in contention with an enterprising 23-run fourth-wicket partnership. Koppole looked in fine touch, hitting two fours and a six in his 20 from 20 balls, while Wolfenden cracked three boundaries in a rapid 18 from 13 deliveries. However, the match swung decisively when Peppard Stoke Row captain Ellis produced a devastating spell of 3 for 8 from his two overs, bowling Wolfenden and Neel Kumar and having Vedalanakar caught by Trystan Davies in between. The Scorchers collapsed from 76 for 4 to 76 for 6 in the blink of an eye, and the required rate climbed beyond reach.

Yuvraj Singh Kaur showed admirable composure at number eight, remaining unbeaten on 12 from 19 balls, while Reyansh Setia contributed a useful 8 before being caught. Elias Haidari struck a late boundary to finish 5 not out, but the Scorchers could only muster 117 for 9 from their 20 overs. Scott Reyburn underlined his all-round quality with an outstanding spell of 2-1-1-1, while the wickets were shared among seven different Peppard Stoke Row bowlers in a disciplined team effort that ended the Scorchers' cup campaign.
