Sabres Grind Out 21-Run Victory Despite Extras-Laden Contest at Twyford
Sonning U13 Sabres posted 147 for 9 from their 20 overs and then held Twyford's Under 13 Typhoons to 126 for 6 to claim a hard-fought 21-run win in the BYCL Under 13 Challenge (Tier 2) East at Twyford and Ruscombe Cricket Club on Monday evening.
Twyford won the toss and inserted the Sabres on a tricky surface, and the early signs suggested the decision would pay dividends. Shriyans Iyengar was run out for a duck in the opening over, and the middle order found runs difficult to come by against a willing but wayward Twyford attack. The Sabres slipped to 53 for 4 before a counter-attacking cameo from Sibikumar Muthukumaran, who blazed 14 from just 10 balls with three boundaries, briefly lifted the tempo. His catch by wicketkeeper Liam Steele off Eddie Scott's bowling brought the innings back to 50 for 3 when the partnership ended, but the damage had been done in quick time.
A significant collapse through the middle overs saw Sonning slide from 53 for 4 to 89 for 7, with Mitul Kalidindi run out for 1 and Finn Reid and Divik Gupta both bowled cheaply. The innings appeared to be petering out until Elias Haidari and Hitesh Kaushik Reddy Karem came together for the decisive stand of the match. The pair added 40 for the eighth wicket, with Haidari striking a six on his way to 13 off 20 balls before being bowled by Avy Mallepally. Karem anchored the innings throughout, finishing unbeaten on 12 from 29 deliveries, ensuring the Sabres reached a competitive total. Captain Fawaz Attiq chipped in with a brisk 6 off 11 balls, while Ishan Jithendriya contributed 10 with two fours.
The extras column told its own story. Twyford's bowlers conceded 90 extras in total, including 67 wides and 16 no-balls across the 20 overs, effectively gifting the Sabres almost two-thirds of their total. Oscar Ingram was the pick of the Twyford attack with 2 for 15 from his two overs, while captain Vivaan R produced an impressively disciplined spell of 2-0-4-1 with no wides or no-balls. Mallepally also took 2 for 8 from two tidy overs.
In reply, Twyford's chase was anchored superbly by skipper Vivaan R, who struck 31 from 37 balls with three fours before retiring not out. He and opening partner Mallepally put on 57 for the first wicket, keeping the Typhoons well in the hunt. Mallepally himself made 15 with two boundaries before being bowled by Jithendriya, and Teddy Butler added 7 as the second-wicket stand yielded a further 47 runs. At 104 for 2, Twyford appeared to be cruising towards victory.
The turning point arrived when the Sabres' bowling attack found its teeth in the closing overs. Jithendriya, who finished with excellent figures of 2 for 17 from three overs, removed both Mallepally and Eddie Scott to stall the chase. Karem picked up the important wicket of Butler, caught behind by wicketkeeper Kalidindi for 7, while Elias Haidari bowled William Butterfield for a duck and effected the run-out of Jack Deane. Shriyans Iyengar chipped in with the wicket of Liam Robinson, bowled for 1, as Twyford's middle and lower order collapsed from 104 for 2 to 126 for 6, falling well short of the target.
The Sabres' bowling was far from flawless, conceding 71 extras of their own, including 45 wides, but the collective effort in the field when it mattered most proved the difference. Idris Malik's tidy spell of 2-0-7-0 and Finn Reid's economical single over of 1-0-3-0 helped apply pressure during the critical middle phase, while Divik Gupta conceded just 5 runs from his two overs. It was a victory built on resilience and a crucial late-innings batting partnership, with the Sabres defending their total with six wickets to spare at the close.
