U13 Sharks Fall Just Short in Tense Run Chase at Knowl Hill

Sonning U13 Sharks were narrowly defeated by Purley on Thames in their BYCL Under 13 Challenge (Tier 1) North West fixture at Knowl Hill on 18th August, finishing on 108-2 in pursuit of 113 for victory. Despite strong batting performances from Archie Jansen and Heet Panchal, the Sharks were unable to overhaul the target within their 16 overs, with Purley's total of 112-3 proving just enough to secure the win.

Purley on Thames won the toss and elected to bat, suffering an early setback when Mayur Jetti was caught by Yuvaansh Sharma off his own bowling for a duck with the score on just one. That early breakthrough, however, was the last the Sharks would enjoy for some time. Opener Mufaddal Ali and Shay Jackson combined for an excellent second-wicket partnership of 55, stabilising the innings and shifting momentum firmly in the visitors' favour.

Jackson was particularly aggressive, striking six fours in his knock of 30 from 25 balls before retiring not out. Ali contributed 15 from 29 deliveries before being bowled by Sharks captain Anay Patel, who returned the most economical figures of the innings with 1-5 from three overs, including a maiden. Harvey Mortimer then took over the scoring duties, smashing 25 not out from 19 balls with three fours and a six, while Tiya Indalkar added a brisk 14 before being bowled by Ethan Cawsey. A 42-run stand between Mortimer and Indalkar for the third wicket pushed Purley to a competitive 112-3.

The Sharks' bowling was shared across ten bowlers, with 26 extras — including 15 wides and 10 no-balls — contributing significantly to Purley's total. Patel's miserly spell stood out, while Cawsey and Sharma each claimed a wicket apiece.

In reply, Archie Jansen gave the Sharks an excellent platform at the top of the order, striking 30 from 27 balls with two fours and two commanding sixes. The first setback came at 14-1 when Aarib Ansari was caught by Joshua Cook off Max Whittle-Clarke for six. That brought Heet Panchal to the crease, and he produced the most fluent innings of the match, racing to 30 from just 20 balls with six boundaries.

Panchal and the Sharks built the chase around a superb second-wicket partnership of 67, with the pair taking the score from 14 to 81 before captain Anay Patel was bowled by Joshua Cook for six. With both Jansen and Panchal retiring not out on 30, the middle and lower order needed to maintain the required rate. Ethan Cawsey (5 not out) and Leo Ribbens (14 not out from 25 balls) batted sensibly in an unbroken stand, but the scoring rate dipped at the crucial stage, and the Sharks finished four runs short on 108-2 from their 16 overs.

Purley's bowling was disciplined when it mattered most, with Harvey Mortimer conceding just 10 runs from three tidy overs and Joshua Cook delivering a decisive spell of 1-2 from his single over. Despite the defeat, the Sharks can take heart from the composed batting of Jansen, Panchal, and Ribbens, though the inability to find the boundary in the closing overs ultimately proved the difference in a contest that went down to the wire.
