Sabres Fall Short as Extras Prove Costly in Defeat at Cookham Dean

Sonning U11 Sabres travelled to Ricketts Field on 23 June to face Cookham Dean in the BYCL Under 11 T16 Pairs league, and despite a solid batting effort from several players, were ultimately undone by a lack of discipline with the ball as the hosts chased down their target with relative comfort.

Captain Anay Goswami won the toss and elected to bat on what appeared a fair surface. Openers Diyaan Monga and Divik Gupta got the innings under way steadily, with Monga the more positive of the pair, striking 8 from 12 balls including a boundary. Gupta contributed 3 before falling as the first wicket, but the early running from the pair gave the Sabres a platform to build on.

The middle order showed encouraging signs. Alexander Hatchett-Walker struck a brisk 9 from 10 balls, while Eleanor Hatchett-Walker matched him with 8 from 14 deliveries, both finding the boundary rope once. Stanley Cox was equally busy, adding 9 from 10 balls with a four of his own. Oscar Tann chipped in with 7, but the Sabres lost momentum through the later pairs as George Davies and Isaac Hutchinson were unable to add to the total, and Sebastian Cook was dismissed without scoring despite hitting a boundary. The innings closed on 89 for 7 from 20 overs, boosted significantly by 39 extras — 38 of which came from wides bowled by Cookham Dean's attack.

The Sabres' bowling effort, however, was where the match slipped away. A staggering 63 extras leaked during the Cookham Dean reply — including 45 wides and 16 no-balls — effectively handed the hosts the game before their batters needed to do much of the heavy lifting. Cookham Dean's actual runs from the bat totalled only 68 across the innings, but the extras alone were enough to transform a modest chase into a comfortable one.

There were bright spots with the ball for Sonning. Sebastian Cook delivered the standout spell, claiming 2 wickets for just 8 runs from his two overs without conceding a single wide or no-ball — a display of control that belied the general struggles of the attack. Divik Gupta was similarly economical, returning figures of 2-0-5-1 with no extras, while Alexander Hatchett-Walker bowled with discipline, conceding only 7 runs and bowling a maiden in his two-over spell. Oscar Tann also picked up a wicket, and Stanley Cox claimed one, though both were expensive.

At the other end of the scale, Eleanor Hatchett-Walker conceded 20 runs including 10 wides and 6 no-balls, George Davies went for 16 with 8 wides, and Diyaan Monga's two overs cost 17 with 8 wides. These spells allowed Cookham Dean to accumulate rapidly without needing to take risks. Rohan Birk top-scored for the hosts with 10, while Dylan Johnson (11), Evan Jones (10), Austin Gleeson (10) and Edward Nye (8) all contributed useful runs in a well-spread batting effort that saw Cookham Dean reach 131 for 5.

The 42-run defeat leaves the Sabres with clear lessons to take forward. The batting was competitive and showed promise across the top and middle order, but the bowling extras column told the story of the match. Cook, Gupta and Alexander Hatchett-Walker demonstrated that accurate, disciplined bowling is achievable at this level, and if the rest of the attack can follow their lead, the Sabres have the batting firepower to be competitive in this league.
