Kestrels Fall Short as Goring Prove Too Strong in Under 9 League Clash
Sonning U9 Kestrels suffered a comprehensive defeat at the hands of Goring in the BYCL Under 9 Super 8s South West league on 14th July, falling 66 runs short of their opponents' total in a match where the visitors' batting depth proved decisive.
Captain Lewis Towner won the toss and elected to field first, but his bowlers found it difficult to contain a well-organised Goring batting line-up. The visitors posted 134 from their 20 overs, with extras playing a significant role — 62 in total, including 34 wides and 18 byes — as the Kestrels' attack struggled for consistency. Goring's lower order proved particularly damaging, with Jonty top-scoring with an impressive 20 off just 12 balls, striking three fours in an authoritative display. Ed chipped in with 13 off 13 deliveries, while Rafe contributed 12 off 12 and Teddy added a brisk 11 off 11, all finding the boundary at regular intervals.
The brightest spot for Sonning with the ball was Vivaan Ramesh, who delivered a superb spell of 3-13 from his three overs, claiming four wickets to emerge as the pick of the Kestrels' attack. His control stood in stark contrast to some of his teammates, as he conceded no wides in his allocation. Alexander Green was also economical, returning figures of 1-9 from three overs, while Ranbir Setia bowled with admirable discipline, conceding just eight runs from two overs and claiming a maiden — a notable achievement at this age group. Sai Sathvik Cherukuri and Arthur Teed each picked up a wicket apiece, as did Oscar Williams.
The chase of 135 never truly gained momentum. Opening pair Arthur Teed and Alexander Green found runs hard to come by against a disciplined Goring attack, with Teed managing just one from 10 balls and Green four from 14. Jonathan Turner and Oscar Williams steadied things briefly in the middle order, each contributing seven runs, but neither could accelerate sufficiently to trouble the target.
Vivaan Ramesh, following up his fine bowling display, was the standout performer with the bat as well, top-scoring for Sonning with 12 off 16 balls including the only boundary of the Kestrels' innings. His all-round contribution was comfortably the most impressive individual effort of the day for the home side. Ridith Kandadi added a useful six from the number nine position, but there was precious little support elsewhere in the order.
Goring's bowling was relentless in its pressure. Captain Aadi was the chief destroyer, returning remarkable figures of 4-2 from two overs, including a maiden, to rip through the Sonning middle order. Ben and Rafe each claimed two wickets, while Jonty matched his batting heroics with 2-6 from two overs, also bowling a maiden. The visitors shared the wickets around impressively, with 15 Sonning dismissals across the innings reflecting the difficulty the home batters faced.
Sonning were ultimately bowled out for 68 from their 20 overs, with extras contributing 30 of those runs. The 66-run margin of defeat underlined the gap between the two sides on the day, though there were encouraging signs for the Kestrels, particularly in Vivaan Ramesh's all-round excellence and the controlled bowling of Alexander Green and Ranbir Setia.
