Match Report
Falcons Soar Past Emmbrook & Bearwood as Saimpu and Choudrie Star at King George's Field
Sonning U9 Falcons secured a well-earned victory over Emmbrook & Bearwood in the BYCL Under 9 Super 8s Central league, chasing down 117 with a total of 128 at King George's Field on 28 June. Captain Ahmad Naqash won the toss and opted to field first, a decision that proved shrewd as the Falcons' bowlers kept the visitors in check before a spirited batting display sealed the win.
Emmbrook & Bearwood's innings was built largely on the efforts of Bodhi Walker and Dottie Earl. Walker was the standout performer in the first half of the match, striking four boundaries in a fluent knock of 17 from just 12 balls. Earl matched that intent later in the innings, crashing three fours on her way to 15 off 10 deliveries. Beyond those two, however, the visitors' batting struggled to gain any real momentum, with several batters unable to convert starts against disciplined Sonning bowling.
The Falcons' attack was led superbly by Yeshwin Saimpu and Asheer Choudrie, who each claimed three wickets apiece. Saimpu was remarkably economical, conceding just 2 runs from his two overs while taking his three scalps — a spell that effectively strangled the middle of the Emmbrook innings. Choudrie was similarly miserly, returning figures of 3 for 4 from his two overs and setting the tone from the outset. Abdul-Ahad Baig chipped in with two wickets of his own, while George Oliver-Gee, Felix Teed, Naqash, Max Chapman, and Nathaniel Hearsey all collected a wicket each, ensuring the entire squad contributed to the bowling effort.
Extras played a significant role in the first innings, with 59 added to the Emmbrook total — including 23 wides and 24 no-balls — inflating the score beyond what the batters alone managed. It left the Falcons needing 118 to win, a target that appeared challenging but well within reach given their superior discipline throughout.
The Sonning reply was anchored by an outstanding innings from Saimpu, who followed up his bowling heroics with the top score of the match. His 22 off 18 balls, laced with three boundaries, provided the backbone of the chase and demonstrated an all-round performance of real quality. George Oliver-Gee provided vital impetus in the lower order, smashing 15 off 12 balls including two fours and the only six of the entire match — a blow that lifted the spirits of the home supporters.
Asheer Choudrie continued his impressive day with the bat, contributing 15 runs to complement his outstanding bowling figures. Kayen Singh Rekhi got the innings off to a positive start at the top of the order, striking two fours in his 11 from 13 balls, while Abdul-Ahad Baig added a composed 9 at the other end. Captain Naqash weighed in with a handy 6 that included a four, keeping the scoreboard ticking during the middle overs.
Emmbrook & Bearwood's bowlers found it difficult to stem the flow of runs, with 61 extras conceded in the Sonning innings — 34 of those in wides alone. Sivansh Vinod was the pick of their attack, claiming 3 for 9 from his two overs and providing the only sustained period of pressure on the Falcons' batters. Zayan Ayub bowled tidily, including a maiden over, but wickets at the other end were hard to come by.
In the end, the Falcons reached 128, surpassing the target with runs to spare across the 20 overs. It was a comprehensive team performance, with Saimpu's all-round brilliance — 3 for 2 with the ball and 22 with the bat — the clear highlight of a dominant display at King George's Field.
