Sonning 2nds Dig Deep but Draw Leaves Them Frustrated at Kings Field
Sonning 2nd XI were unable to chase down a formidable total of 254 as Wargrave captain Peter Dean's magnificent unbeaten century anchored the home side's innings, leaving the visitors to settle for a draw in this Division 4B encounter at Kings Field on 13 June.
Winning the toss and electing to field, Sonning skipper Dan Anderson saw his side make an early breakthrough when Max Murphy had Luke Taylor caught by David Coutts with the score on just three. However, Dean was unmoved at the other end and set about building a platform with Hardik Dhallam, the pair adding 61 for the second wicket before Indeveer Sahota had Dhallam caught by Murphy for 30.
What followed was a masterclass from Dean, who found an excellent partner in Calvin Freese. The third-wicket stand produced a devastating 153 runs, with Freese striking eight fours in a fluent 71 before Murphy had him caught by Saranjeet Singh with the total on 217. Murphy then struck twice more in quick succession, removing Mo Raja for a golden duck — caught by Raoul Harding — and trapping Joe Neall lbw for 16 to finish with outstanding figures of 4-59 from his 12 overs. Dean, though, remained immovable, finishing on 121 not out from 154 balls, an innings laced with 15 fours and a six, as Wargrave posted an imposing 254 for 5 from their 52 overs.
The Sonning reply started brightly enough as Sahota and Duncan Parr put on 38 for the opening wicket. Parr was the more aggressive of the two, striking three fours in his 21 from 25 balls before falling caught off the bowling of Jegannathan Srinivasan. The wicket triggered a collapse as Srinivasan proved a handful, dismissing Anderson for two and then accounting for Sahota, bowled for 28, to leave Sonning teetering at 66 for 4.
Robert Jones and David Coutts steadied the ship with a crucial 44-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Jones batted with positive intent, hitting five fours in his 39 from 57 balls, but his dismissal — caught by Tuvshen Morgan off Saraff Saleem — left the visitors still well adrift of the target. Wicketkeeper Henry Cook injected some urgency with a breezy 19 from just 16 balls, including three fours and a six, sharing 42 with Coutts before Peter Dean brought himself on and bowled Cook to claim his sole wicket.
Coutts remained the bedrock of the Sonning innings throughout, carrying his bat for an unbeaten 43 from 89 deliveries, an anchor role that ultimately ensured the draw. Alongside Murphy, who finished 19 not out from 36 balls, the pair saw Sonning safely to 185 for 6 from their 48 overs. With the asking rate climbing beyond reach, survival became the priority and the lower order delivered.
Srinivasan was the pick of the Wargrave attack with 3-30 from 10 tidy overs, while Saleem's miserly spell of 1-26 from 10 overs with three maidens kept the pressure on throughout. For Sonning, Murphy's four-wicket haul with the ball will be the standout memory, though the inability to contain Dean's century ultimately set a target that proved beyond reach. Both sides collected three game points from a draw that neither will feel entirely satisfied with.
