Sonning 3rd XI Cruise to Comprehensive Victory Over Welford Park

Sonning 3rd XI posted an imposing 251 for 9 from their 45 overs before bowling out Welford Park for 134 to claim a dominant win in Division 7A at Knowl Hill on Saturday.

After Welford Park captain Andy Cale won the toss and elected to field, the visitors made an ideal start. Aveer Sidhu was caught by wicketkeeper Sivasilam Ganapathy off Cale's bowling without scoring from the first ball of the innings, and Rahul Sood followed for a duck, caught by Drew Brown off Cale, leaving Sonning in early trouble at 14 for 2.

Aashmit Ghosh steadied the ship with an authoritative innings that proved the backbone of Sonning's total. He put on 56 for the third wicket with Kyle Dellar-Law, who contributed a breezy 23 from just 16 balls, striking two sixes. Ghosh continued to accumulate, reaching 57 from 51 deliveries with nine fours and two sixes before falling bowled to Drew Brown, having helped guide Sonning to 103 for 4.

Akash Vasa then anchored the middle order with a patient half-century, his 50 coming from 64 balls and featuring six fours and two sixes. A partnership of 53 with Ethan Towner for the sixth wicket pushed Sonning past the 170 mark. Towner made a well-struck 36 from 36 balls before being caught behind off Srinath Balasubramanian, but the momentum was firmly with the home side.

Christopher Dowse ensured the late order maintained the scoring rate with an excellent 46 from 47 balls, including six boundaries and a six. His unbroken 51-run stand with Reyansh Setia (13 not out) for the ninth wicket carried Sonning to their final total of 251. For Welford Park, Drew Brown was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 36 from his eight overs, while Cale took 3 for 56.

Welford Park's reply never truly got going despite Sateesh Kumar's battling 34 from 37 balls, which included three sixes. Bharat Shiva offered early resistance with 25 from 23 balls in a second-wicket stand of 30 with Kumar, but a sharp run out ended his innings and the complexion of the chase changed quickly. Max Seaward was caught by Akash Vasa off Towner for a golden duck in the very next over, and Welford Park slipped from 41 for 2 to 42 for 3.

Kumar held the innings together until he was caught off Ghosh for 34, and from 77 for 4 the visitors collapsed dramatically, losing three wickets for 14 runs to slump to 91 for 7. Mohit Karangad was the chief destroyer, taking 3 for 24 from seven overs, while Ghosh matched him with 3 for 22 from six overs, completing a fine all-round display. A last-wicket partnership of 25 between Mason Brown (11 not out) and Drew Brown (12) briefly delayed the inevitable, but Christopher Dowse had the final say, bowling Drew Brown to wrap up the Welford Park innings at 134 all out in just 27.5 overs, sealing victory by 117 runs.
