U13 Sharks Fall Short Against Wargrave in BYCL Encounter

Sonning U13 Sharks travelled to Kings Field on 26th May to face Wargrave in the BYCL Under 13 Challenge (Tier 1) North West and were unable to chase down a formidable target, falling 70 runs short in a 20-over contest.

Wargrave, batting first, set about building a commanding total from the outset. Opener Barney Beard struck three fours in a brisk 16 from just 10 balls before being bowled, giving Sonning an early breakthrough with the score on 20. However, that proved to be the last time the Sharks' bowlers dismissed a Wargrave batter, with the remaining three wickets all coming via run outs.

Rafe Angus anchored the Wargrave innings with a composed 24 not out from 25 deliveries, featuring four boundaries, and was involved in a crucial second-wicket stand of 62 with Aidan Musson, who contributed 18 before being run out with the score on 82. Captain Rory Harris then injected further momentum with an unbeaten 27 off 16 balls, lacing five fours, while Taylor Cook was equally destructive with 28 not out from 20 deliveries, also hitting five boundaries. Charlie Barnes chipped in with a handy 20 from 16 balls before being run out, and Dominic Jackson added a quickfire 9 off 5 balls. With 38 extras also supplementing the total, Wargrave posted an imposing 185 for 4 from their 20 overs.

The Sharks' bowling figures were unfortunately not recorded individually, but the fielding unit did well to effect three run outs, which were the only means of stemming the Wargrave flow of runs. Containing a batting line-up in which seven players reached double figures was always going to be a tall order.

In reply, Sonning's batting details were not fully recorded on the scorecard, but the Sharks could manage only 115 for 3 from their 20 overs. The chase was always behind the required rate against a disciplined Wargrave attack. Taylor Cook was the pick of the home bowlers, returning figures of 2-0-4-1 with a maiden over to his name, while captain Rory Harris was equally miserly with 2-0-3-0.

Extras played a significant part in the Sonning innings, with 66 in total — including 26 wides and 24 no-balls — accounting for well over half of the Sharks' runs. Charlie Barnes conceded 18 runs from his two overs with seven wides and eight no-balls, while Jack Cowin was similarly wayward with 16 runs off two overs including eight no-balls. Despite the generous extras, the Sharks were unable to capitalise sufficiently with the bat to mount a serious challenge.

Wargrave's comprehensive 70-run victory was built on a powerful collective batting display and, despite a loose spell from some of their bowlers, their early control with both bat and ball proved decisive. The Sharks did earn six bonus points in the defeat — four for batting and two for bowling — but will need to find greater consistency across both disciplines in future fixtures.
