Sharks Fall Short as Boyne Hill Prove Too Strong at Home
Sonning U11 Sharks travelled to Boyne Hill Cricket Ground on 6th August for a U11 T16 Pairs League fixture and, after being asked to bat first following the toss, were unable to post a competitive enough total as the hosts ran out comfortable winners.
Boyne Hill's decision to insert the Sharks appeared vindicated early on as their bowlers kept a tight lid on scoring. Rayan X produced a devastating spell of 2-1 from his two overs, including a maiden, to claim four wickets and rip through the middle of the Sonning batting order. Aum Narwal was equally impressive at the other end, returning figures of 2-4 from two overs with a maiden of his own, while Adam Jalal's tidy two overs conceded just three runs. The Sharks found run-scoring extremely difficult against this disciplined attack, with several batters struggling to get off the mark.
Captain Charlie Bright showed some resistance at the top of the order, compiling 8 from 18 balls, but the standout innings for Sonning came from Jamie Dollinger, who batted at number ten and struck a team-high 17 off 16 deliveries, including three boundaries. Dollinger's aggressive approach at the back end of the innings injected some much-needed impetus, with his runs coming largely against Jeremy Muscat, who conceded 17 from his two overs. Elijah Patel contributed 7 off 14 balls with a four, while Zille Ansari matched that tally with 7 from 10 deliveries.
Despite Dollinger's late flourish, the Sharks were restricted to 84 for 9 from their 20 overs. A significant extras tally of 33 — including 13 wides and 12 byes — offered some relief, but too many batters were dismissed cheaply, with the loss of nine wickets proving costly in the pairs format where dismissal penalties apply.
Boyne Hill's reply was built on contributions across the batting order and bolstered by a substantial 44 extras from the Sonning bowling attack. Opener Aum Narwal led the way with a brisk 13 off 13 balls, while Nathan Haynes struck 10 off 11 deliveries including the only boundary of the innings. Jeremy Muscat added a useful 9 from 11 balls, and the runs were shared around with no fewer than eight of Boyne Hill's ten batters reaching double figures or contributing meaningfully.
The Sharks' bowling lacked the discipline needed to defend a modest total. Extras leaked freely, with 22 wides and 16 no-balls recorded in the second innings. Ella Hanson's two overs included ten wides, while Arnav Basumatary conceded six no-balls from his spell. The best bowling figures for Sonning came from Elijah Patel, whose two economical overs yielded just 4 runs, and Oliver Barker, who picked up 1-5 from his two overs. Satvick Iyengar also claimed a wicket, returning 1-9 from three overs, though his five wides offset some of that good work.
Boyne Hill reached their target of 108 for 2 from 20 overs with relative comfort, the two wickets falling to Iyengar and Barker providing the only consolation for the travelling Sharks. The 24-run defeat underlined the importance of both batting discipline and bowling accuracy at this level, with the Sharks' extras in the field ultimately proving as decisive as the runs conceded off the bat.
