Match Report

Captain's Knock from Rita Green Steers Sonning Women to Comfortable Victory

Sonning Women's 1st XI secured a convincing win over Slough in their Super 8 Development Group 4 fixture at Maidenhead and Bray Cricket Club on Sunday, chasing down a target of 89 with 14 runs to spare and losing just a single wicket in the process.

Slough, having won the toss and elected to bat, got off to a brisk start through opener Aamna Aslam, who struck four boundaries in a lively 19 from just 12 balls. Navya Santhosh provided useful support at the other end with 11 off 12 deliveries, and the pair gave Slough early momentum. Captain Habiba Arslan also contributed 11 from 11 balls lower in the order, while Adya Bhanot added 10 from 13, ensuring that runs came from throughout the batting card.

Sonning's bowling attack found wickets hard to come by, with extras proving costly — 17 wides and three byes accounting for 20 of Slough's 88-run total. Captain Rita Green was the standout performer with the ball, delivering a superb spell of 2-0-2-1 that included a maiden over, providing the discipline Sonning needed in the middle overs. Grace Phillips was also economical, conceding just seven runs from her two overs.

In reply, Sonning's chase got off to a solid foundation. Sophie Parker looked composed at the top of the order, striking two fours in her 13 off 13 balls, while Geethika Jyothis contributed nine from 11 at the other end. Elizabeth Van Deventer then injected pace into the innings with an attractive 15 off just 11 balls, finding the boundary three times.

It was skipper Green, however, who took the chase firmly by the scruff of the neck. Batting at number seven, she played the innings of the match — an unbeaten 29 from only 16 deliveries, peppered with six fours. Her aggressive strokeplay ensured there was never any doubt about the outcome, and she led from the front in every sense.

Slough's bowlers toiled hard but struggled for consistency. Ashmita Biswal claimed the only Sonning wicket to fall, dismissing Grace Phillips for six, but conceded six wides in her two overs. Drisana Gowrishankar proved the most expensive, leaking 21 runs from her two overs. Captain Arslan and Navya Santhosh were the most disciplined, each bowling their full allocation of four overs without conceding a wide, but neither could find a breakthrough.

Sonning reached their target of 102 for one from their 16 overs, securing six league points in a result that underlined the value of Green's all-round contribution — a match-defining double of 1-2 with the ball and 29 not out with the bat.
