Match Report

Sabres Secure Victory as Bowlers Dominate Cholsey Chase

Sonning U13 Sabres claimed a hard-fought win against Cholsey in their U13 Super 8s Gauntlet Goblet Pool 4 fixture on 8th June 2023, successfully defending a modest total of 79 thanks to an outstanding collective bowling performance that claimed ten wickets.

Captain Toby Whitehead won the toss and elected to bat on what proved to be a tricky surface for run-scoring. The Sabres innings was characterised by steady contributions rather than any single dominant display. Isaac Miller top-scored with 11 from 13 balls, striking two boundaries, while both Taya Revenko and Kishan Akula added 8 apiece. Revenko hit one four in her 13-ball knock, and Akula was the more fluent of the two, finding a boundary in just seven deliveries.

Extras played a significant role in the Sabres' total, with 42 of the 79 runs coming without the bat. Sam Newbold's two overs for Cholsey proved particularly costly, conceding 16 runs entirely in wides. Isabella Lumlock was the pick of the home bowling attack, delivering an impressive spell of 2-0-3-1 including a maiden over, while Oliver Nathanielsz was economical and dangerous, taking 2 for 6 from his three overs.

Defending 79, the Sabres' bowling attack rose to the occasion superbly. Taya Revenko set the tone with a sensational opening spell of 2-1-1-3, bowling a maiden and picking up three wickets while conceding just a single run. It was a performance that immediately put Cholsey on the back foot and established the control Sonning needed.

Isaac Miller matched Revenko's three-wicket haul with figures of 3 for 3 from his two overs, maintaining relentless pressure. Kishan Akula also bowled with commendable discipline, taking 2 for 4 including a maiden, giving Cholsey's batters no respite.

Cholsey's resistance came primarily from Isabella Lumlock, who struck 26 from 15 balls with three fours in a combative innings. Sam Newbold contributed 21 off 18 deliveries, and Oliver Nathanielsz hit a brisk 19 from 13 balls with three boundaries. However, the constant loss of wickets — ten in total — proved too great a handicap under the pairs format's dismissal penalty system.

Despite the individual efforts of Lumlock and Nathanielsz, Cholsey could only muster 83 for 10. The combination of wickets falling regularly and the five-run deduction per dismissal meant the Sabres' bowling excellence ultimately proved decisive. Sonning collected five league points to Cholsey's two, a result built on disciplined bowling and steady batting contributions across the entire squad.
