Stingers Soft Ball Fall Short as Slough Claim Indoor League Victory

Sonning Stingers Soft Ball were unable to chase down Slough's total of 79 in the Berkshire Women's Softball Indoor Division 1 fixture on 12th February 2023, finishing on 64 for 3 from their 12 overs in what proved a frustrating afternoon for the home side.

Captain Melissa Pengraeve won the toss and elected to field first, hoping to set up a controlled chase. Slough, however, managed to build a competitive total thanks largely to Zobia Ahmed, who top-scored with 17 from 13 balls, striking one four in a confident display from the number six position. Nafisa Firyad and Imaan Suleman each contributed 12 to provide a solid platform through the middle of the innings, with Suleman finding the boundary once during her knock.

The Stingers' bowling attack shared the workload across five bowlers but struggled with discipline at times, conceding 19 extras — 15 of which came from wides. Katie Barrows was the most wayward, conceding six wides and two no-balls in her two overs, while Elinor Longridge went for 16 from her two overs. Rita Green claimed one wicket in her three-over spell, though she was the most expensive bowler with 19 runs conceded. Pengraeve also picked up a wicket in her two overs for 14 runs, while Chloe Bailey was the most economical of the attack, returning figures of 3-0-15-0.

In reply, the Stingers never quite matched the required rate. Pengraeve led from the front with the bat, top-scoring with 17 from 16 deliveries, including a four and the only six of the Sonning innings. Rita Green complemented her bowling wicket with a useful 14 off 12 balls, clearing the ropes once, while Chloe Bailey contributed 12 from 14 balls at the top of the order.

The middle order, however, could not sustain the momentum. Elinor Longridge managed just 2 from 10 balls, Katie Barrows scored only 4 off 12 deliveries, and Sarah Wonham added 3 from 8 balls late on. Three wickets fell during the chase — one each to Zobia Ahmed, Arfa Saeed, and Slough captain Richa Bhalla — with the opposition bowling proving far tighter than the Stingers' own effort. Imaan Suleman was particularly impressive, conceding just 9 runs from her three overs without taking a wicket.

The 15-run deficit ultimately reflected Slough's superior contributions across the batting order. While the Stingers relied heavily on Pengraeve and Green, Slough had five batters reaching seven or more, spreading the scoring burden more effectively. The 19 extras conceded in the first innings, compared to 12 given away by Slough's bowlers, also proved a telling difference.

The result leaves the Stingers with work to do in the league, with both batting depth and bowling consistency areas for improvement as the indoor season continues.
