Dowse's Magnificent 57 Not Enough as Sharks Fall Two Runs Short Against Kidmore End

Sonning U13 Sharks suffered heartbreak in their BYCL Under 13 Challenge fixture against Kidmore End, falling agonisingly short by just two runs in a contest that swung dramatically throughout both innings. Chasing 140 for victory, the Sharks were bowled out for 137 off their 20 overs despite a superb unbeaten 57 from wicketkeeper Joseph Dowse.

Captain Arnav Duvvuri won the toss and elected to field, and the decision appeared inspired when Eshan Wang Kumar struck twice in quick succession to reduce Kidmore End to 1-2. Harry Devanny and Theo Pawley both fell for ducks, caught by Dowse and Duvvuri respectively, as the visitors found themselves in early trouble. Wang Kumar's opening spell of 3-0-11-2 set the tone, while Duvvuri bowled tightly at the other end, conceding just 14 runs from his two overs and claiming a maiden.

Freddie Syms counter-attacked with 16 from 11 balls before Tejus Maddi had him caught by Dowse. Freddie Woodfin contributed 15 before being run out by Siddharth Kumar, and the visitors slipped to 45-5 when Saurav Sivaram bowled Sumay Minnaar for 10. At that stage, the Sharks appeared firmly in control.

Ethan De Savoye transformed the innings with a commanding knock of 34 from 26 balls, striking four fours and a six before retiring not out. He found an excellent partner in Sam Robinson, whose blistering 22 from just 12 deliveries included four boundaries. Their sixth-wicket stand of 36 shifted momentum decisively. Ibrahim Ali Mir eventually bowled Robinson, and Ishan Jithendriya removed Harry Turnbull for a duck, but a late unbroken partnership between Ali Syed (9 not out) and Dylan Cox (10 not out) pushed the total to a challenging 139-7.

The Sharks' reply began disastrously when Ibrahim Ali Mir was bowled by Robinson for a duck with the score on nought. Dowse then took centre stage, launching an extraordinary counter-attack that kept his side in the hunt throughout. He smashed ten fours in his unbeaten 57 from 31 balls, playing with authority and timing that belied the pressure of the situation.

Wickets tumbled at the other end, however, as Kidmore End's varied attack kept the Sharks under constant pressure. Duvvuri made 5 before being caught, Shubh Vedalankar fell for 4 to De Savoye, and Siddharth Kumar was caught off Woodfin without scoring. Sivaram contributed a useful 10 before Devanny bowled him, and when Freddie Syms claimed Eshan Wang Kumar and Ishan Jithendriya in quick succession, conceding just 5 runs from his two overs, Sonning were reeling at 74-8 and apparently beaten.

What followed was a remarkable rearguard. Idris Malik and Namit Desai put on 42 for the ninth wicket, with Malik striking 12 from 18 balls and Desai making 9 from 16 as they dragged their side back into contention. Dowse continued to accumulate at the non-striker's end, but the partnership was broken when Malik was run out by Harry Turnbull with the score on 116. Desai remained unbeaten on 9, but with the last pair unable to find the three further runs required from the remaining deliveries, the Sharks finished tantalisingly on 137-9, leaving Kidmore End victorious by just two runs in a match that will linger long in the memory of all who witnessed it.
