Match Report
Akula's Fifty and Late Bowling Heroics Earn Scorchers a Share of the Spoils in Dramatic Tie
Sonning U15 Scorchers posted 165 for 4 from their 20 overs against Reading at King George's Field on 1 July, only for a remarkable second-innings collapse and a confusion over the retired batsman rule to produce one of the most extraordinary tied matches in the BYCL Under 15 T20 Blast this season.
After Reading won the toss and inserted Sonning, captain Kanishka Suriarachchi fell early for 8, caught by Samarth Manu off Harjasdeep Singh with the score on just 9. What followed was a commanding batting display from Kishan Akula, who anchored the Sonning innings with a superb 53 from 46 balls, lacing 12 boundaries in a knock that provided the backbone of the total. George Rothermel contributed an excellent 31 from 28 deliveries, the pair adding 55 for the second wicket to wrestle the momentum firmly in Sonning's favour.
A brief wobble saw Shreyas Koppole caught for 3 off Dheeran Gounder, but Akula found another willing partner in Jack Durrant, who struck a brisk 20 from 14 balls including three fours. Their fourth-wicket stand of 47 pushed Sonning past the 120 mark and set the platform for a strong finish. Akula retired not out with his fifty secured, while Edward Jones (10 not out) and Tom Wolfenden (12 not out, including a six) ensured the Scorchers made full use of their overs. Twenty-eight extras, including 18 byes, further inflated the total as Reading's bowlers struggled for consistency, with Aristo Voltaire (1-25), Gautam Singh (1-29), Harjasdeep Singh (1-16) and Dheeran Gounder (1-10) sharing the wickets.
Reading's reply got off to a blistering start through opener Rishit Pandey, who played with real authority on his way to 50 from 38 balls, striking ten fours. After Muhammad Zayan Khuram departed for a first-ball duck — caught by Suriarachchi off Wolfenden — Pandey and Samarth Manu put together a stunning partnership of 97 for the second wicket that threatened to take the game away from Sonning entirely. Manu was particularly destructive, hammering six fours and a six in his 41 from 30 balls before being caught by Suriarachchi off Siddharth Kumar with the score on 110.
That dismissal proved the turning point. Reading's middle order crumbled spectacularly, losing seven wickets for just 44 runs as Sonning's bowlers tightened the screws. Elias Haidari was the chief destroyer, returning outstanding figures of 3 for 17 from his three overs, removing Joypreet Singh, Dheeran Gounder and Gautam Singh. Neel Kumar bowled an economical spell of 1 for 11 from three overs, while Siddharth Kumar's crucial wicket of Manu shifted the contest. Akula then capped a remarkable all-round performance, taking 3 for 4 from just 1.1 overs, including the key scalps of Srishaa Ganagabalan, Harjasdeep Singh and Vansh Solanki — the latter stumped by Suriarachchi — as Reading tumbled from 134 for 5 to 154 for 9.
With Pandey having retired not out at 50 and Reading needing 12 from the final over, confusion arose between the coaching teams over whether the retired batsman could return to the crease. Pandey remained off the field, and Reading's innings ended at 154 for 9 from 19.1 overs, with Aristo Voltaire stranded on 8 not out. Both sets of coaches subsequently agreed that a genuine misunderstanding of the rules had occurred and that a tied result was the fairest outcome.
Suriarachchi deserves particular mention for his contribution behind the stumps, taking three catches and executing a stumping during Reading's innings. Akula's double of 53 with the bat and 3 for 4 with the ball was undoubtedly the standout individual performance of the evening, while Haidari's three-wicket haul ensured the Scorchers earned a share of the points from a match that will live long in the memory of all who witnessed it.
