Match Report

Ayub's Brilliant 82 Not Enough as Sonning Fall to Beaconsfield in Division 1B

Muhammad Ayub produced a superb knock of 82 from 94 balls, striking nine fours and three sixes, but his efforts were ultimately in vain as Sonning's 1st XI went down to defeat at Beaconsfield in the Thames Valley Cricket League Division 1B on Saturday. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Sonning were bowled out for 164 in 45.3 overs before Beaconsfield chased down the target with two wickets to spare in 41 overs.

Sonning's innings got off to a difficult start, with opener Alex Mcloughlin caught behind off James Woodhead for just 3 with the score on 7. Captain Peter Higginbottom showed some early resistance but was caught by Montgomery Evans off Harry Taylor for 9, leaving Sonning 29 for 2. Mohammed Zahid steadied the ship alongside Ayub, the pair adding 39 for the third wicket before Zahid was bowled by David Justus for a well-constructed 32 from 63 deliveries.

Ayub then found an ally in wicketkeeper Dhruv Peshkar, and together they put on 48 for the fourth wicket to push the score to 116. With the platform seemingly set for a substantial total, Sonning instead suffered a dramatic collapse. Peshkar fell caught for 11, and Montgomery Evans ripped through the middle order with figures of 3-23 from his seven overs, dismissing Amaad Ali lbw for 2 and Henry Cook caught for a duck in quick succession, the score lurching to 118 for 6.

Ayub refused to yield, however, adding a crucial 43 alongside Xavier Yarde for the seventh wicket to lift Sonning to 161. But Harry Taylor proved devastating with the ball at the death, claiming 4-21 from 7.3 overs, including Yarde bowled for 4 and Wasim Amin for a golden duck in successive deliveries. When Ayub was finally caught behind off Tristan Van De Weg for his excellent 82, the innings folded swiftly, with Sonning's last three wickets falling without the addition of a single run.

In reply, Beaconsfield's chase looked set for a comfortable ride as Alex Lloyd Taylor attacked from the outset with a blistering 40 from just 41 balls, lacing eight fours and a six. Danyal Ghazi made the early breakthrough, bowling Evans for 8, but Lloyd Taylor dominated a 21-run second-wicket stand with Jago Catherwood before Damario Goodman bowled Catherwood for 6.

Goodman was the standout performer with the ball for Sonning, returning superb figures of 4-47 from his marathon 15-over spell. He trapped Ben Taylor and Matthew Summers lbw before bowling William Midwinter to leave Beaconsfield wobbling at 98 for 6, still 67 runs short. Captain Higginbottom also contributed with the ball, dismissing the dangerous Lloyd Taylor lbw for 40 and later bowling Harry Taylor.

The match appeared to swing back in Sonning's favour, but David Justus and Harry Taylor constructed a match-defining 54-run partnership for the seventh wicket. Justus anchored the innings with a patient 23 from 59 balls while Taylor counter-attacked with 39 from 47 deliveries, hitting eight boundaries. Mohammed Zahid eventually broke the stand, having Justus caught by Yarde for 23, and Higginbottom bowled Taylor to leave Beaconsfield 158 for 8. However, Mattias Gianneri and James Woodhead calmly knocked off the remaining runs, guiding the hosts home with seven runs to spare and two wickets in hand, condemning Sonning to a frustrating defeat despite Ayub's outstanding individual contribution.
