Match Report
Sonning 2nd XI Fall Short as Christopherson's Century Powers Penn & Tylers Green to Victory
Sonning 2nd XI posted a competitive 223 all out at King George's Field after winning the toss and electing to bat in this Division 4B encounter, but an unbeaten century from Lochie Christopherson guided Penn & Tylers Green to a seven-wicket victory with more than 14 overs to spare.
Captain Dan Anderson anchored the Sonning innings with a patient 35 from 67 balls, striking six fours as he provided the stability the middle order needed. Openers Duncan Parr (18) and Gaurav Jayan (23) laid a solid platform with a 32-run opening stand before Henry Barber made the breakthrough, removing both in quick succession to leave Sonning 46 for 2. Robert Jones contributed a brisk 14 from 20 balls in a 32-run third-wicket partnership with Anderson, but it was the fifth-wicket stand that truly lifted the innings.
Jameel Ahamed (30 off 39 balls) and Edward McLoughlin combined for a crucial 50-run partnership that took Sonning past 150. McLoughlin was particularly aggressive, smashing 31 from just 21 deliveries including five fours and a six before falling caught at the hands of Thinal Herath off Raunak Biswas. The loss of McLoughlin and Ahamed in the same passage of play — both departing on 156 — threatened to stall Sonning's progress entirely.
Lower-order resistance proved vital, however. John Rimmer's entertaining 29 from 25 balls, featuring four fours and a six, added 34 for the eighth wicket alongside Ethan Towner, who finished unbeaten on 20. Mohit Karangad chipped in with a rapid 10 from seven balls as Sonning scraped past 220 before being bowled out in the 51st over. Biswas was the pick of the Penn & Tylers Green attack, claiming 5 for 75 from his 15 overs, while Barber (2-36) and Michael Henderson (2-65) provided useful support.
The visitors' reply began in commanding fashion. Paul Boyle and wicketkeeper Jack Lloyd put on 53 for the first wicket at better than a run a ball, with Lloyd cracking six fours in his 28 before being caught by Parr off Geethika Jyothis. Boyle continued to punish anything short, reaching 37 from 44 balls with eight boundaries before Parr had him caught by Ahamed to make it 70 for 2. Jameel Ahamed then bowled Biswas for just 3, and at 74 for 3, Sonning sensed an opportunity.
That hope was swiftly and emphatically extinguished by Christopherson. Coming to the crease with his side under mild pressure, he proceeded to dismantle the Sonning bowling with breathtaking authority, hammering 18 fours and a six in a stunning unbeaten 102 from just 59 deliveries. Dylan Yatigammana provided composed support at the other end, compiling an unbeaten 46 from 57 balls with seven fours as the pair added an unbroken 153 for the fourth wicket.
Anderson used eight bowlers in an attempt to break the partnership, but nothing could stem the flow of runs. Duncan Parr's 10 overs for 41 represented the most economical figures of the innings, while Ahamed (1-44 from nine overs) and Jyothis (1-31) were the only wicket-takers. The target was reached in just 35.5 overs, Christopherson steering the winning runs to seal a comprehensive victory that earned Penn & Tylers Green the full 26 points, leaving Sonning to reflect on a match that slipped away despite their batting efforts in the first innings.
