Sonning Women Secure Comfortable Victory Over Wargrave at Kings Field

Sonning Women's 1st XI claimed a well-deserved victory over Wargrave in their Super 8 Development Group D fixture at Kings Field on 22nd May 2022. Captain Sharon Fleming won the toss and opted to field first, a decision that ultimately proved sound as her side restricted the visitors before chasing down the target with relative ease.

Wargrave's innings got off to a brisk start thanks to opener Kaelin Dell, who top-scored with 24 from just 19 balls, striking three boundaries in an aggressive display at the top of the order. However, Sonning's bowlers worked hard to peg back the scoring rate through the middle overs. Amy Bennett provided a late flourish for the visitors, hitting an unbeaten 19 off 14 deliveries including two fours, while captain Ruth Payne contributed a useful 9 to help Wargrave post 102 for 4 from their 16 overs.

The Sonning bowling attack shared the wickets around effectively. Grace Phillips was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 1 for 25 from her four overs, including an impressive maiden. Chloe Bailey chipped in with 1 for 20 from three overs, while Melissa Pengraeve's two economical overs yielded 1 for 11. Frances Howson deserved particular credit for her tidy spell of 3-0-15-0, the most economical of the Sonning bowlers.

In reply, Sonning's chase of 103 began steadily with openers Siobhan Davis (6 off 7 balls) and Chloe Bailey (4 off 17) seeing off the new ball attack. The early and middle-order contributions were modest, with Grace Phillips making 2 and Freya Spafford adding 3, but crucially wickets were preserved, with only Elinor Longridge falling as the sole dismissal of the innings.

The match turned decisively when Melissa Pengraeve came to the crease at number five. Having already impressed with the ball, Pengraeve delivered a match-winning knock of 20 from 16 balls, lacing four boundaries in a commanding display that shifted the momentum firmly in Sonning's favour. Her all-round contribution was comfortably the standout individual performance of the afternoon.

Captain Fleming played a supporting hand with a brisk 7 from 8 balls, while Frances Howson finished the innings strongly with an unbeaten 13 off 11 deliveries, including a well-struck four. Longridge also contributed 6 before becoming the only Sonning batter dismissed. Extras played a notable role in both innings, with 27 extras apiece — Wargrave's bowlers conceding 21 wides during Sonning's reply.

Sonning reached 88 for 1 from their 16 overs, and with the pairs format's starting total of 200 and five-run dismissal penalties in play, the hosts' superior run-scoring and disciplined batting — losing just one wicket compared to Wargrave's four — proved the decisive margin. Fleming's side collected six league points from the fixture, leaving Wargrave with just one, as Sonning recorded a thoroughly professional team performance on home soil.
