Scorchers Hold Their Nerve to Edge Past Reading in Tense Six-Run Victory

Sonning U13 Scorchers posted 149 for 6 from their 20 overs and then held off a spirited Reading chase to claim a hard-fought six-run victory in the BYCL Under 13 Blast North West at King George's Field on Tuesday evening. Captain Tejus Maddi won the toss and chose to bat on a surface that offered something for both sides, a decision vindicated by a series of useful contributions throughout the order.

Openers Henry Verrier Jones and Oliver Barker gave the Scorchers a solid platform, putting on 34 for the first wicket. Barker was the more fluent of the pair, striking two boundaries in his 13 from 18 balls before being stumped by Gautam Singh off the bowling of Sharvil Jadav. Verrier Jones fell in similar fashion shortly after for 8, leaving Sonning 48 for 2 and in need of acceleration.

Saurav Sivaram provided exactly that, smashing 13 from just nine deliveries, including a four and a six, before Jadav struck again to bowl him and claim his second wicket. The best was yet to come, however, as Jamie Dollinger produced the standout innings of the match. Dollinger's unbeaten 25 from 25 balls, featuring three fours and a six, anchored the middle overs, and his 40-run fourth-wicket partnership with skipper Maddi, who contributed a well-crafted 18 from 19 balls with two boundaries, shifted the momentum firmly in the home side's favour. Dollinger retired not out to give others an opportunity, and Frederick Parkes seized his chance with 14 not out from 13 balls. A brisk 32-run stand between Parkes and Namit Desai pushed the total past the 130 mark before the innings closed on a competitive 149 for 6, bolstered by 45 extras from a wayward Reading attack that conceded 30 wides across the innings.

Reading's reply began disastrously when Avyukt Bagga was run out for 5 with the score on just 8, Maddi effecting a sharp piece of fielding. From there, however, Dhvaneet Suthar and Aristo Voltaire steadied proceedings with patient knocks of 13 and 14 respectively, both eventually retiring not out. The real threat came from Gautam Singh, who played the innings of the chase. Singh struck four fours and a six in an aggressive 29 from 24 balls, and his 63-run second-wicket partnership with the batters around him hauled Reading firmly back into contention.

Dollinger provided a crucial breakthrough with the ball when he had Indrajit Nandakumar caught by Maddi for a duck, and Sivaram then removed Singh lbw with the score on 106, a dismissal that swung the contest back towards the Scorchers. Kapish Sharma kept Reading in the hunt with 13 from 20 balls, adding 30 for the fourth wicket alongside Angad Dosanjh, but Namit Desai bowled Sharma to leave Reading needing 14 from the closing overs with wickets in hand running short. Dosanjh was then run out by Verrier Jones for 7, and the required rate climbed beyond reach.

The Scorchers' bowling figures told the story of a young attack that was occasionally loose but found the key wickets at critical moments. Maddi led by example with three economical overs that included a maiden, conceding just 11 runs, while Verrier Jones also bowled a maiden in his single over. Sivaram and Desai each claimed a wicket apiece, and Dollinger's all-round contribution of 25 runs and one wicket underlined his influence on the contest. The challenge for Sonning, however, was the 56 extras they conceded, with 32 wides and 14 no-balls offering Reading a lifeline throughout the chase.

In the end, Reading finished on 143 for 5, six runs short of their target. It was a match that demonstrated the growing maturity of the Scorchers' batting line-up and the ability of their bowlers to hold their composure when it mattered most, despite the occasional wayward spell.
